Until it gets to an airshow where people can step it off I’m leaning towards it being 70-75 feet in length. We don’t even know the dimensions of the J-10 yet and people are already saying its such and such, as if they know the exact length.
F404 turned out to be nearly as expensive as the F100 to operate. The USAF wisely chose the latter so that they could bring down the F100 costs on both F-15 and F-16. The T-50 suffers the same fate; not enough power to be a great fighter and too expensive for most countries to be a trainer. The F125 size of motor is a considerable step back from the F404. First make it affordable. Second make it affordable. Third make it aff…. You get the picture.
Btw – the F-20A outclassed anything remotely F-5. Saying the F-5E was comparable to the F-20A is intellectually dishonest.
I’m all for a big head version of an F-5F. But replace the two engines with a single F125. Expand the front half to optimize clearing through the transonic region by pigybacking on the SSBD research courtesy of NASA. This will give it the volume necessary to have an internal bay, no external loads on the typical flight. Create tomorrow’s Freedom Fighter, a trainer that can also be bought as a fighter. The virtualized cockpit readouts are all fine and dandy for training, but give them the ability to carry live ordnance and use onboard electronics to carry out the training/combat mission. If you’re pushing for virtual then you may as well leave out the cockpit.
I would think if you’re moving to an F-35 centric fleet then you’d want something single-engined and uses a similar cockpit layout. An EODAS should be considered at some point. And the program should naturally evolve into an F-5 replacement program for export. It makes sense to use the three-barrel 20MM like they use on T-50. (or was it F-CK-1?) and it makes sense for an AESA since it’s the least maintenance intensive solution. And it makes sense for an internal bay for one 1000-class dumb bomb complete with a smart attachment. The internal bay should also be able to drop multiple smaller bombs, but certification should focus on the single large bomb and practice bombs. The internal bay should also be both AIM-9X and AIM-120C compatible so trainees can perform live releases in them, but this would also factor into use as a LWF. Keep it simple. Don’t skimp to the point it’s pointless. Aim for Mach 2. No stealth. Streamlined. Ultra conservative maintenance costs. And keep it affordable by keeping it light, perhaps target under 20K pound MToW class.
How about an F125-powered F-50 two-seater? Light fighter version equipped with an AESA, EODAS, three-barrel 20MM cannon, internal bay for a single 1000-pound class bomb (complete with guidance kit) or two AIM-9X/AIM-120C.
It’s like going to the car lot to buy a 2012 car only to find out it uses an engine and a set of tires manufactured in 1998. And, oh by the way, your new car warranty expires at the end of the month. It looks good and shiny on the surface, but somehow you know it’s going to cost you more in the short, middle, and long run if you had simply spent that extra 4% now.
The drawback with the Draken in comparison to the Starfighter is that the latter had missiles earlier in its history. The 20mm Vulcan against 2-4 of the Draken’s 30mm guns might be worth comparing in a high speed and high altitude intercept. The Draken eventually has Falcon and Sidewinder, but the Starfighter in Italian service had Sparrow/Aspide, right? The Starfighter probably was the superior interceptor between the two. The Delta Dagger definitely had an edge over both as an interceptor. The question is was it really all that much?
Rats (Boeing, P&W) simply clung to the same life raft when the ship (the U.S. economy) began the dive down.

For some reason if they had purchased Rafale and had used them to attack protestors I don’t think anyone would have been any more impressed. At least we are not reading about F-16’s attacking protestors. What a pie in the face that would have been.
