The game Dassault played to show greater efficiency is maximum dry thrust for a pair of M88 against a single M53 in wet thrust, because obviously two M88’s have far higher dry thrust than does a single M53. It’s not a fair comparison, I know, but it’s how Dassault shows Rafale to be far more efficient on two engines.

Which M53 are you comparing to which M88. Generic numbers can be terribly misleading. The M88 uses blisk technology and carbon fiber blades versus M53’s aluminum parts. There is no M53 that scales within 21% of the same generation M88, and it only gets worse with M88 versions.
I see the difference in weight is over 50%. M88 is considerably lighter and more efficient.
The single M53 burnt more fuel in dry thrust than two M88’s do for the same power range. It only becomes more disparate with the second oven running. Now granted two M53’s at maximum dry will just barely run more efficient than the M88’s at that thrust level due to the M88’s leaning on zone one of its augmentors.
The M53 although about 25% heavier only has a slight thrust edge over the M88’s well below a 25% difference. I believe it’s just under 15% different.
Here’s a mock-up of the Mirage 4000 two-seater with Mica. Rafale is virtually the same aircraft at 75% of the weight.

I almost think that India just needs to look for saboteurs in their LCA program at this point. There is absolutely no external reasons Tejas hasn’t scaled production. These debates about solutions span back to the 90’s. Tejas has limped along since the prototypes started flying. Before the prototypes the program moved quickly. Even the Kaveri engine problems didn’t really stall the program until prototypes started appearing. Is it really the Indian industrial machine broken or is their military being undermined? Just too many coincidences for this much human ineptitude.
I’d love to see F-16 fly for India. But unless it’s the big wing version (I.e. F-2A) and a General Electric engine, I’m not so sure it’s worthwhile. They would almost be better off buying Mirage 2000 plans and build them. The F100-powered F-16 would mean yet another foreign logistical line of supply, whereas they already work with GE and the F404IN. The regular wing is pretty much no improvement over LCA. The big wing at least has four heavy duty hard points free when flying with droptank. Sure they could use CFT, but you didn’t improve the real issue, high wingloading.
In no way am I saying they need F-2A. That is not actually a true F-16, rather it’s Japan’s own iteration of F-16 with a heavily modified forward body compared to the standard F-16. Japan created it’s own flight control system for F-2A which dramatically raised costs. But Japan also wanted total software control, to customize loads, too. India basically would need to do something similar to use Astra, Kh-31, and any non-US or indigenous weapons.
There are other types of inlets. You didn’t mention the F-105’s type.
You have to see the forward swept inlet of the F-105 at a few angles to appreciate it’s flexibility.

Mirage 4000 just wasn’t pretty. If it had been similar to Rafale perhaps it would have been marketable….

Perhaps if HAL had aimed for an M2K-class fighter to begin with they wouldn’t be so hampered by weight restrictions. And then the competition could have been on a 130 to 150kN class engines rather than the unobtanium that Kaveri has been. Seems to me the Indian government is self regulating from political infighting and bureaucracy. Everything that couldn’t possibly be a problem initially did happen, and that was after careful planning to avoid it. The larger Tejas would have still comfortably allowed an AMCA with dual engines between the MKI and LCA. And they wouldn’t be squeezing M2K performance out of an F404-powered light fighter…
