Mirage IV is a completely different animal than Mirage III or F.1
Come now. If the Mirage F.1 had just been updated with the latest long nose everybody would have skipped Mirage 2k 🙂

The J79 was superior at higher altitude than the Atar. None of the Mirage users used them at 50,000 feet, but we know the J79 could handle it. The Atar was a hotrodded motor, ran hotter than the metals and corresponding lubrication systems were able to handle, especially at high altitudes. So the J79 wasn’t some hot mess or anything. It’s use on Kfir was because it was available.
I realize wiki and other sources list Mirage III ceiling being anywhere from 52,000 to 56,000 feet. The problem is you don’t last long above 40,000 feet without a positive pressure suit. Once you get that high in one it blossoms as air pressure in the cockpit drops. Everything becomes more difficult to function in the tight cockpit of the Mirage III. The second more critical issue is engine cooling. The Atar wasn’t meant to run that high except for single runs on a head-on target. The J79 was designed with high altitude in mind.

Wait, now, you’re saying the light strike fighter – outclassed by F-15’s, F-4E’s, and F-16’s – was a POS? So the least likely fighter to be used in air defense and most likely to be used in ground attack was a POS? Interesting POV. Very nonsensical. But interesting.
Nobody has ever claimed Kfir to be a world class fighter. However, for developing countries without all the amenities of the bleeding edge, it’s a rather deadly fighter. Some would probably argue to both friend and foe. But it brings capabilities into reach that would require far more man-hours and money to get elsewhere. It’s more or less the western equivalent of a MiG-21 Lancer or Bison program. It’s not meant to be F-15 class.
I thought the Chobam IFR probe on the Tejas would be retractable, similar to the solution on the Jaguar. The images above show a rather crude afterthought solution.
And in a terrible location for forward visibility. A shoulder location should be better for view and less likely to dump fuel over the windshield. Either way, retractable would have been nicer drag-wise.

How many Kfir are still available? They could replace MiG-21 non-Bison with Kfir in the short term to cover the gap. They aren’t exactly a large step down in capability from Tejas and can be used just as well air to ground, as air to air. It’s not like they don’t use the same ordnance, too…
The Mirage G originally was slated to use TF30 like the A-7. That gives you an idea on why Dassault abandoned TF30 for the air combat version. M53 would have been interesting.
Mirage F.1 was never going to be equivalent to Mirage III raw wing size, but surely with a better radar it could have been just as good as Kfir. We’re talking about exports to developing countries, not frontline NATO…
Did F.1 ever have access to Mirage 5/50 fuel tanks with attachment points? That would have solved the limitations when carrying ECM pods.
That 130+ MiG-21 airframe drop is probably insignificant in overall capabilities. They could probably afford to lose even more if Tejas had even hit 50 airframes by next year considering the big increase in capability for each individual unit. If Tejas networking capacity and sortie rate is anything like they’re hinting at then Texas can comfortably replace MiG-21 at a 4:1 ratio in the short term.
Wouldn’t the Mirage 5 be kind of the Eurocanards for exports?

Small, hmmm, the six was 70 feet long, the Thud was only 64 feet long.
The F-106A was built low drag and it’s maximum takeoff weight was actually quite small for its length. Its fuselage was a triangular profile along the longitudinal axis, not the square or round profiles typically used. The F100 may not have had performance equal to J75 at FL600, but it would have required far less fuel to make the initial climb to FL360.
As far as speed, if you read some of side stories involving the Six from the site dedicated to it, it was flown at speeds up to Mach 2.7 and 70,000 feet. Not dash or zoom but flown in steady state.
Now for a Gripen craft to to use the F119 it would have to gain a lot of size.
I can imagine that you understand glass front glass has its thermal limitations. Rare excursions to M2.7 are the exception, not the rule. Later designs protected the canopy from thermal issues that allowed better vision than the Convair wedged canopy. I’m not sure how one would elect to tackle these issues. But we know Northrop and Lockheed did pretty well using chines to focus much of the air friction to the panned underside, so I imagine it wasn’t impossible to tackle. But I find the idea of Mach2.7 in an operational F-106 to be far fetched.
