If not an F/A-50 light fighter, why not go for something more substantial that’s already designed around STOL operations… like the Gripen?

32-wheel landing gear comprised of two nose bogies and fourteen main wheel bogies (seven per side). Each bogie has two wheels. A total of twenty wheels can be steered. MTOW of 1,400,000 lbs, with a 550,000 lbs maximum payload; the aircraft weighs 385,800 lbs completely empty. Up to 440,000 lbs can be carried externally on the fuselage. It uses a 11,500 ft takeoff run at MTOW.

An-124 has 24-wheel landing gear designed for rough field operation comprised of two nose bogies and ten main wheel bogies (five per side). Each bogie has two wheels. Like the An-225, the landing gear is adjustable to allow the transport to “kneel”, to assist cargo loading. In conjunction with the full-span leading-edge slats and large flaps, the powerful engines are equipped with thrust reversers to allow the An-124 to operate off of rough airstrips only 3,800 feet long. The takeoff run on concrete for a fully loaded An-124 is 8,300 feet, while the commercial An-124-210 can takeoff within 8,000 feet. On dirt the takeoff run of the An-124 exceeds 9,800 feet.
The 747 is equipped with four main gear units, each with four-wheel bogies, plus twin nose wheels so that the plane’s weight is spread across 18 wheels.
The Airbus 380 consists of two underwing struts each with four wheels, two central under-fuselage struts each with six wheels and a twin nose wheel. The wheels of the fully loaded exert less psi than the fully loaded 747.
The B-52 has four separate and steerable landing-gear units. This allows the pilots to align the landing gear with the center of the runway while crabbing the aircraft into the wind during crosswind landings.

Strategy in the Missile Age by Bernard Brodie
It has about every conceivable strategy lain out and in the end when you weigh in all the factors its pretty clear that BMD is a losing strategy. It merely escalates a game that costs too much to play. Somebody has the ear of every administration since the missile age and pushes for bright new shiny BMD toys. Problem is they don’t work, can be too easily circumvented, and you go broke trying to deploy a baseline system. Yes, its expensive to get the least effective level of defense! Obama is carrying on a retarded strategy carried on by the past four administrations. Carter was the only one in the past fifty years that even (smartly) contemplated killing it.
That’s why our SP artillery died so horribly over in Iraq, even when Iraq successfully got off counter-battery fire. /end sarcasm
Mobility does not mean or necessitate constant movement. The Serbs showed that even relatively large missile launchers can be mobilized successfully. Its not like you have to put them on treads or to make them SP. Towed assets have worked well in the past. Towed assets are more survivable at better than a 3:1 ratio historically speaking.
The most dangerous payload China would throw at Taiwan is a dispersal unit for landmines. Sufficient saturation of the airbases is their current strategy. They want the Taiwanese airstrips out of commission for prolonged periods and will fire in much smaller barrages than what is being thrown around in various threads recently. The missiles are merely to make mobility difficult on the island, which mobility is their best defense. China would concentrate on sustaining sorties near the RoC airbases and over the straits to cut off the latter’s air assets. They cannot allow any serious force of counter-air, ASW, or attack warplanes loose if they are to win.
I don’t think a seaborne invasion would work all that well by itself. China has worked hard on their paramilitary forces, especially their airborne components. The first strike would be stealth positioning of submarines to cut off the Taiwanese navy; ambushes would be lain for both RoC and USN assets. Chinese submarines would use their crude mine-laying equipment to blockade the exit points.
The missiles would launch soon after the opening shot, as they assemble their invasion forces. Really, there is no point in being too fast getting the land component assembled. The sea forces would concentrate on keeping mine-layers out of the strait, which would thwart their amphibious force. I see a coordinated effort most likely being the strategy with a hopeful airdrop deep behind the coasts to cutoff reinforcements at the point of an actual invasion. If land assets of RoC cut down the airborne component in an overwhelming blow and the amphibious force turns around; it means the RoC attack helicopters will no longer be distracted and will be turned around quickly to smother them.
I’m thinking bigger shell sizes than what they use in Pantsir or Shilka. 76mm was the low end of AAA. Common AAA shell diameters were also the 90mm and 130mm. The larger the shell the more complex it can be which also scales the cost. I can see a usefulness for a semi-mobile 203mm system for strategic defense, but it wouldn’t be realistic for most other situations. But smaller shell diameters would be plenty mobile and useful at the same time. That is why I wonder why the lack of development in this respect.
It hurts if nobody buys goods, but it is tenable to sit on cash reserves. The problem is that cash has no fixed value in imbalances of trade. Failure to cash in the reserves is an idiotic way to trade because it allows the debtor to walk away and set the terms of repayment. China can try to swamp the world market with U.S. cash, but it will quickly undermine the real value of that currency. The rest of the world will cease trading with China in that scenario. With cash being a subjective value, China is in lousy position to wage war at this time.
They’ll handle it the same way they did when Iran and North Korea started trying to counterfeit their ways into export economies. Don’t think that Taiwan won’t be defended. And if China was so confident that they could pull it off, why do they have so many four lane superhighways along the coast that lead to nowhere? It’s obvious they plan to use them as runways if necessary. You do realize that China is in the position of dependent of the United States economy to maintain their internal security? If the United States stopped trading with them tomorrow the regional governments would have little choice but to fend for themselves and the central government would collapse. The bank collapse already has caused friction within their government. I’d hate to see what happens in a unregulated bank collapse. The chaos would be unpredictable.
For some reason that last Su-35 picture looks distorted. The engine housing further away looks bloated compared to the near one.

Not trying to be critical, but it would help if people illustrated their arguments. This thread lacks much in the way of visual content. Carlos Kopp style diagrams, comparative charts, etc. Anything visual really would help seeing the arguments. So much of the debate seems to be people overlapping the same material only they interpret it differently. Perhaps if people illustrated their point of view it would allow the people lurking to see more granularity in what points you are trying to make.
The whole idea of moving to pilotless platforms in the air is to decrease their size and increase their basing options. You shouldn’t need SH-60 on the LCS. Did the helicopter lobby influence that decision?
If you don’t have a squeak then it’s hard to justify the grease. Anything the state can do to emphasize the problem is justified in their mind. Ethnic cleansing isn’t justifiable, but a War Against Terrorists is completely reasonable. Even if the target demography is much smaller than the actual target in practice. At least that’s the mindset of a mob.
I hadn’t really considered the miniaturized laser seeker guidance package being developed for 2.75″ rockets. Very plausible. You understand the premise of tactical ballistic missiles, being area denial weapons. And because the majority of them fly an oscillating flight path one missile simply isn’t enough to engage a single missile. With a mix of guns – and the smart aim of computers – you can place several KE or HE projectiles in the flight path of a tactical ballistic missile. And the same system could intercept glide weapons. Plus there is no reason it cannot be used for fire support. It forces an obsolescence of several generations of standoff weapons currently used worldwide. And it’s high RoF is affordable. Netcentric warfare at it’s finest.
The possible time frame envelope of Taiwan buying F-16 C/D blk 50/52 is improved if Iraq orders the initial 24 new builds they reportedly want. The Bush and Obama administrations have both blocked the sale of new build F-16 for Taiwan to date. Its overcoming the administration reluctance to export F-16 that’s key. They can always attach conditions for repatriation of the new F-16’s if Taiwan peaceably agrees to integrate to the mainland.
