Back in the 1980s I wrote one of the first articles on the RBS-70 in the US. Below is a link to page where I posted some of the photos and the over view manual of the RBS-70 which I think you will find of interest. Finally, Iran has the RBS-70 which they obtained during the Iran-Iraq War. It is one of the enduring mysteries of how they did.

Anyone know if the rbs 70 has actually been used in combat?

IR homing missile launches are typically picked up by passive IR detectors. The problem isn’t knowing the missile is coming, the problem is that it’s coming. What to do… What to do….

OR… Our radar and defensive electronics have progressed faster than optics thereby negating the need for IRST.

Now, with the advent of VLO fighters and the ROW catching up with radar tech and defensive electronics, we have decided that an advanced IRST would be a good addition to have.

In all fairness its not like they were naked in this regard. Their optical search capabilities have always been a mystery to the public and it may or may not have been an irst of some form. Obviously they felt the need for some improvement, and they have chosen a very public way to promote it. Makes me wonder if there isn’t more to the upgrade.

So what is the ultimate version of the Phantom II?

Did anyone stop to think that Sea Gripen publicity was a political balloon? Saab and BAe have been more or less collaborating for forty years. Maybe, just maybe, Sea Gripen is driven by the British need for affordable air wings. Sea Gripen is better than cancelling a flattop.
