I picture the IDF as what the F-17 would have been if it never migrated to F404 engines. The IDF was so underpowered compared to other aircraft in its size range it makes me think they must have had something else planned before the Mirage 2000/F-16 purchases.
What engines would they have upgraded to if any… TFE-1088-70? A pair of 12,000 pound thrust engines that literally occupy the same volume of space as an F404 seems like a too little aggressive of an upgrade. And to jump to F404’s seems like just as much a waste of time when the F-18B/D models were available from the U.S. surpluses.
Since the ROCAF is trying to counter the J-10 of the PLAAF then they are wise to just try to find more Mirage 2000-5’s/F-16’s. Engines upgrades add very little more to the F-CK-1 than a range decrease in exchange for slightly more power. It is still stuck with the old F-5G/F-20 radar which is very underwhelming when it comes to challenging the threats posed by the PLAAF.

Yeah, big expensive difference for an aircraft… that’s why nearly every large fighter previously was designed and built in both versions. The F-22B concept was not stopped at the mechanical engineers desk, it stopped at the tooling process.
And there is more than one size of drop tank. You must be figuring all of the hard points have to carry 600 gallon tanks. I don’t see a need for them to carry the same version of the drop tank, nor would they have to be limited to 600 gallon tanks on the inner pylons. Give the export model the 610-gallon tanks of the F-4/F-15 on the inner pylons and allow for four more 480-gallon tanks under wing. That brings you to 3140-gallons, which is 740-gallons over the current 2400-gallon total of the base model. In this way they gain a lot of overall range for strike missions, which is something Australia, Japan, and Israel would all appreciate.
The F-22B layout was already accomplished, it was just never implemented. And there is already space for two more hard points. You must have been kidding.
If the Kaveri engine had been mastered five years ago would the airframe be the excuse holding the program back?
I still think LM needs to come up with an export version of the F-22 and give it a new designation so that it is exportable. A few things I would recommend to make it worthwhile:
* only offer it as a two-seater
* only offer Pratt & Whitney F135/General Electric/Rolls-Royce F136 versions without tvc
* use the AN/APG-81 AESA-radar rather than the AN/APG-77 AESA of the original F-22A
* retain 20mm M61A2
* add extra pair of under-wing pylon stations capable of holding fuel, bringing its maximum to six over the current four
* push for an FB designation (i.e. FB-118) so that there is no confusion to its mission not being about air superiority
The canopies are a multi-layered cellular acrylic construction treated with a inert polyurethane finish that has to be replaced on a constant basis. The poly layer is deposited over primer, which itself sits on a catalytic thermal coating. After the scarification process some of the primer layers over the canopy have gold and iridium atoms suspended in them, the key ingredients to its rcs reduction. They arc spray on ultra thin epoxy layers and use a tiny plasma jet coupled to an ion stratifier to distribute the metal atoms evenly.

They may be ram treated but they don’t seem to have the louvers that act as rcs reducers in their intakes like in the B-1B.
Does anyone else think that there will be a defection of a J-10 to Taiwan sometime in the next five or ten years?
At least with the SH they can begin to integrate the future standoff missile/bomb systems they’ll be using with the F-35. In that way it will help with the transition to F-35.

F-22B would theoretically be a two-seat F-22A model. A revised F-22A should jump to the connotation of F-22C. I think using F-22C gives it a clear distinction from the A model but follows the traditional letter progression heritage already in use.
