The real problem is the way the software is written for specific hardware. If they’d taken a more open approach where the hardware could innovate separate from the software, that is improve one without affecting so much the other, than they whole dilemma would be self resolved. This is a cultural problem within the design group more so than a simple technical issue.

And in reality the processors used are not so obsolete in comparison to other systems still relevant to today’s military forces. It is just slow compared to what is off the shelf now. The whole system could be vastly improved with the current technology and a more granular battlefield awareness would be possible. Awareness after all is what one tends to lack in the event of catastrophe.

Stupid idea. If they try to sell them after that press release then they won’t get much of a return on the investment at this point. Seriously, the Harrier is beyond its turn in the spotlight. But to dump them before the next generation is ready seems completely absurd.

India has this customary practice where people say “yes” to answers when the true answer is “no”. Its called lying in most circles, but its tolerable and customary for the people in India. Kind of like how time in many south American cultures is loosely interpreted when they say what time they will do something. Different strokes for different folks.

Apache is still the best system the u.s. army has for removing immediate threats to army aviation on the battlefield. It can shoot from behind hills and destroy low altitude air defenses while hovering safely out of harm’s way. People around here read ranges on missiles and assume that means the missile can effectively engage targets at that range. The truth is Apache since the Longbow program is the only attack helicopter out there that can effectively deal with threats like Tor M#/Pantsir/Tungusta.

Kind of makes you wonder if the sitting Norwegian government is even on the same playing field let alone with the same set of rules as their Swedish neighbors. 😛
