    The IRIS-T used existing lima protocols in its early development. Its probably backwards compatible with existing equipment on alot of planes and most likely doesn’t take any customization.

    The weapon package includes 25 IRIS-T.
    And I think the plan is to buy a handful of AMRAAMs to get an idea about BVR.
    So basically, the QRA Typhoons have a pair of IRIS-T, but in general Austrian Typhoons can be considered unarmed. :rolleyes:

    The fact I want the nafta and cafta agreements withdrawn and you have no clue on the realities of these matters has nothing to do with the topic on the venezuelan su-30 downing an f-16 over cuba or related matter. Venezuela might buy Russian, but the truth is the majority of South America is indebted by the choices of their own people to the world banks and not to a sole U.S. power. Life isn’t free and those people can’t make desperate decision to better themselves. If they relied more on themselves in the first plane they’d never racked up the debts. Even now Venezuela is sinking itself with this mad game of bluff with the u.s. and they too will collapse under their own weight.

    No kidding, the thread got derailed by a lying piece of crap talking about how mexicans are indians and therefore the u.s. owes them or something.     It had slightly less thrust than weight (with reheat engaged), but it could still super cruise. It still can in South Africa.

    Slip streaming past Mach 1 without afterburner isn’t real useful unless you can do two things, exceed the transonic drag barrier with your payload in tow and sustain the speed in a cruise configuration for a useful amount of time. I wouldn’t doubt a fully fuelled and even armed Lightning F.2A (btw – it was said to be more aerodynamic with the nose mounted missiles) could exceed Mach 1 on dry, but the dry thrust was probably unable to sustain a meaningful cruise configuration which means to sustain the greater than transonic speed it is hemorrhaging fuel.

    You have to reach a point where your fuel burn off is more efficient in relationship to range than what is possible at the point of the transonic speeds. Don’t think of Mach 1 as the simple barrier, its more related to the shock cone generated as it passes through the sound barrier. The F-22 will use less fuel to sustain just over Mach 1.3 than it will at Mach .85 to Mach 1.25, which says a lot about its engineering.

    What the British lost in the retirement of the Lightning was not a superior speed interceptor, it lost a superior high altitude interceptor. I am still marvelled that one was able to stalk a U-2 at 80,000 feet during NATO exercises.

    A compact, tightly packed airframe screams “efficient use of space” to me.

    I’d like to see a bigger diameter nose on Rafale to allow a bigger array to be fitted, but I see no real advantage in a longer nose. A plug behind the cockpit might give space for more internal fuel, but Rafale has more range than Typhoon, and giving the canards a longer moment arm would increase instability and would have real implications for the FCS. Dassault went for a more stable, more conservative configuration than Typhoon quite deliberately, recognising that higher instability makes for more difficulties with FCS design, just as the Typhoon partners went for a more conservative radar.

    The line art did not widen the nose or canard spacing at all. I think you overlooked the simplicity of the change. The width in the area of its center of gravity is where the volume mostly increased, something that doesn’t greatly affect the plane’s aerodynamic design. The FCS you speak of is going to be more affected by factors of weight and overall balance issues moreso than the distance between front and rear control surfaces, almost trivial in comparison. An offset in the nose, an elongation to allow for counterbalance, is necessary in cases of such an increase in the fuselage, and was done purely for the continuity of design flow purposes.

    And who cares how this would compare to Typhoon? This is about selling a plane that has a market AND an aftermarket. Increasing the volume of its interior is key to making room for future improvements in technology. The extra space in the nose and body allow plenty of future expansion. And RCS is best deadened with materials, not strictly by some trick design flow. I doubt anything shy of true stealth is anything but a novelty in the long run, and the electronic elements of survivability will be more valuable over the lifetime of the product.

    I’ve always thought the Rafale was too tightly compact. They should of built space between the engines for additional volume capacity, perhaps even given the nose more room, too. That tightly streamlined form just screams of inefficient use of space.

    The F-111’s did have a gun and some models were wired for Sidewinder, so it hardly makes sense what he said. Since shooting down planes is more opportunity than exact art, anything armed with a capable gun/missile could do the job. Even the “lead sled” shot down migs when given an opportunity.

    If it can break the sound barrier is purely academic. It gives an aircraft a speed advantage of maybe 10%, which will not be the reason to procure that aircraft. Supersonic speeds at deck level are the best way to get wet feet when the aircraft suffers fuel starvation after 5 minutes.

    The laws of physics basically makes this tactic good for some planes. If you plane is 80 feet long and 50% heavier than its foe, then it usually can afford such luxuries. Today’s fighters just aren’t that big and therefore they don’t do it. But in its day the F-105 was a superb speedster on the deck, which made it especially difficult to catch back in the original red flag days. Not bad for a plane often thirty years older than its stablemates.

    Silly me, I always thought it was the gas tank volume they lacked most.
