Part of the issue was that each plane dipped down into the lobes of civilian radar and disabled their transponder making them virtually blend in with a whole different classification of air traffic. They lowered their airspeed and flew along natural geographical features to hide their intentions. It was rather predictable that the perpetrators were anything, but uneducated guess makers. Somebody went to great lengths to organize this and it definitely wasn’t some crazy religious nuts hiding in caves.
People continue to underestimate the sacrifices willing to be made – that the cultural motivation behind the attacks leads people to accept martyrdom as simple costs of furthering the cause – and will continue to make into the future. Nationalism didn’t spring to life in the twentieth century due to fear of economic systems, but rather due to lingering tension from centuries of resentment. People forget how the Great War began. The second was purely the first played out after a lull.
There is no magical defense or master plan to defend against this movement. It has festered for nearly 800 years with several violent clashes between cultures to push back. Amazingly the ones that push back are looked upon as villains. Funny how quickly and easily the common shy away from violence, even when it’s for survival. Organization of the common man can only be accomplished with ideology, something the West currently lacks. The people that carried out that diabolical plan did it in plain sight and nobody thought to intervene?
Without ideology how can one motivate the masses to thwart such plans in the future?
