Metal of all types has horrible fatigue ratings compared to wood. It surprises me that it’s not possible to infuse some kind of wood shock plate between sections to absorb the movements during intensive strains and oscillations. Wood tends to last through a thousand times the workout before failure. Perhaps there is too much heat inside the fuselage?

Strange no consideration for the NATO standard 35x228mm? Oerlikon’s naval version is designed to engage targets at 3500m. Denel’s version can engage surface targets at 6km or aerial targets at 4000m.
Its the housing for the leading edge actuators IMHO. The mechanism is much more rapidly maneuvered than traditional slats, now integrated into the dynamic flight control systems.
If somebody was to do a civilian An-124 refurbishment in the US or Europe, why not use just two GE90-110’s?

The problem is RD-33 and RD-93 has about a 200kg gearbox and starter package that isn’t included in the weight, but is needed for installation. The RD-33 also has 1040mm max diameter just like RD-93. It’s not a giant difference. The big advantage of the RD-33/93 is dry thrust SFC. Otherwise the engine is basically a pig with lipstick compared to engines in its size and weight. It’s not even cheap when you consider the maintenance unless your people work for relatively nothing.
Except F135 SFC is actually 0.886lb/lbf.hr
It’s been posted as low as .70 for its sfc. It’s still a secret.
