Perhaps Drones of the future with sophisticated sensory and AI are going to be instructed to interact with aircraft around them, whenever possible to ride in their slipstream to conceal their radar position and to extend range.

I predict that Antonov falls back into favor within 12 months and begins producing superior products for the Russian Commonwealth within 36 months.

It might have a similar sensor, but it would be a major overhaul to give it the battle space management command suite.

Engine limitations are what limit speed. The F-16 has a limit due to its fixed inlet, whereas a variable inlet likely would have allowed it to match the F-15’s max speed. There is nothing to suggest the F-16’s max speed is limited by drag.

You put the radar in, but made no room for the electronics rack(s). Trying to connect the radar to the mission computer by a cable is problematic for high speed processing as it adds major latencies. You have to move the nose forward a good meter IMHO. You also have more wetted area by upwards of 50% if that shaded area is what you propose as the fuel tanks. It also looks like your weapons bays overlap other areas. What kind of landing gear is it supposed to have? As it is now there is no accounting for a nose wheel.

M88-2 isn’t a huge size jump from F125, bridging the size from F125 to F404. Why does it have to be American?

It would be a compelling way perhaps to justify life extensions on F-15B’s or F-15D’s without breaking the bank trying to do new builds. There aren’t enough F-15E’s as it is now.

The real question is if it can use wingtip recievers to locate targets passively. If CUDA was reality you could be potent with passive EO and RWR with minimal radar to pull off intercepts.

The MiG-31 has plenty of extra airframes to convert. Putin should have a pair for his personal trips to check on his gas ventures.

Clearly someone will create a side by side seating version of the F-35A for the EW mission, complete with twin F110’s rather than a single F135. Clearly it has to have mission overlap over both Growler and Lightning II while costing as much as both combined, plus it has to come in both CATOBAR and VTOL forms to make it fit for the USMC to operate 10-11 of them. They’ll be able to nick any extra Growlers out of the budget and clearly cancel any slep programs for Super Hornets. Three or four dozen should allow them to retire all forms of F/A-18’s by the time the program hits LRIP. And it’ll be the first US combat fighter with its own toilet and kitchenette.

Where does the RN intend to patrol in the future? Has contraction of the mission crept in, too?

I think that a turboprop would give plenty of speed for vast ocean searches at 25,000 feet. I wonder if the searches are being done in the 60,000 feet range, which would suggest the turbofan to be the more appropriate engine.

Wouldn’t the 737-700ER work for it just as well?

The current high efficiency turbofans were developed with salt water contamination in mind. Whether its enough would only be known when the tender is, and how it is, written.

Everyone knows here how I prefer multi-engined over single engined. But this is about a contest on automation.

If they need long endurance they have cots non-afterburning turbofans in the range of .35 for sfc. There are also engines being demonstrated in the range down to .3 for sfc. These engines have enormous mtbf’s to match their conservative fuel usage. But I’m pretty sure they aren’t friendly to the military parts pipeline, and what’s a good MTBF in the civilian world isn’t always reflected in military service.
