barrythemod: that’s some fantastic information there. How much time in NYC is realistic to see the main parts? Bearing in mind we have a relatively tight schedule, so can’t spend too much time in each place.
As I said previously,if planned well,you can do it in 2 days….
1.Midtown….Central Park (the bottom half),Times Square,Macy’s on Broadway and 35th,then across to the Empire State Building on 5th and 33rd for the afore mentioned night time view.
2.South….start at the bottom with a visit to Battery Park from where you get the boat to Ellis Island and later,on to Lady Liberty.Walk up Wall Street stopping of to see the progress on the Twin Towers replacement.If it’s dark by this time,a walk across Brooklyn or Manhatten Bridge is well worth it just for the view looking back at the Island (stunning),and it costs nothing!
The only attractions on the West side are the aircraft carrier Intrepid but she’s been moved for some much needed restoration and Liberty Helicopters for that once in a lifetime night-time flight.
East side,you could explore Little Italy,China Town but it’s not essential.

barrythemodThe new HP Sauce from the Netherlands has arrived in the UK and it’s awful! My advice is to get to the supermarket and buy up all the remaining bottles marked “Made in Birmingham” as quickly as you can!! You have been warned!!
Are you refering to H.P Brown Sauce? This was never my favorite. May I refer you to Hammonds Chop Sauce,the king of brown sauces IMHO.It’s hard to track down in London but at one time Summerfields/Gateways stocked it.

When WT799 was in active service, its light produced a beam so powerful it could be seen at least three miles away.
It hasn’t got a bad range in daylight either 🙂

A cheap day out is taking a picnic to Central Park and just wandering around.Also nibbiling on a Hot Dog from one of the many vendors.Check out Strawberry Fields,the huge carousel,the model boating pond and the 2 ice scating rinks.If you’re feeling fit,you can jog around the Resevoire or even make it up to 110th street.
If you don’t like confined spaces,avoid climbing up inside The Statue Of Liberty.Once half way up.it is neer impossible to get out,due to the very narrow circular metal stairs.
If it’s in your budget,a helecopter ride,at night,is essential….absolutly stunning.
Have got similar info on Las Vegas and L.A. but just having moved home,the info is “in a box somewhere.”

This is Hollywood paying it’s dues and saying sorry for not giving Scorsese an award years ago and realising that,for one reason or another,that films of that quality just can’t be made today (in Hollywood).

When I first heard of this film,it reminded me of the way Mike Leigh works.In a way,it does,because the ensemble cast are soooooo good,you quickly forget that they are acting.You’re a fly on the wall peering into their lives,
A bit of patience is required to get through this but it’s certainly rewarded by this droll and oddly touching film.

barrythemodPAN’S LABYRINTH,from director Guillermo Del Toro,is a wonderful,but very violent (This is NOT one for the kids) tale of a little girls adventure during Spain’s worst era of fascism.I was transported to an era of tyranny and bloodshed–rural 1944 Spain,in the still violent aftermath of the 36-39 civil war.I was also carried to the magical realm of faries and fauns that seem only to exist in the mind of our 11 year old herione.The production design is stunning.This film took me to the roots of fantasy and horror.
If you want to scare the kids,let them watch Lemony Snicket’s-A Series Of Unfortunate Events or Monster House.
I’m off to order The Devil’s Backbone,an earlier Del Toro film:eek:
