PAN’S LABYRINTH,from director Guillermo Del Toro,is a wonderful,but very violent (This is NOT one for the kids) tale of a little girls adventure during Spain’s worst era of fascism.I was transported to an era of tyranny and bloodshed–rural 1944 Spain,in the still violent aftermath of the 36-39 civil war.I was also carried to the magical realm of faries and fauns that seem only to exist in the mind of our 11 year old herione.The production design is stunning.This film took me to the roots of fantasy and horror.
If you want to scare the kids,let them watch Lemony Snicket’s-A Series Of Unfortunate Events or Monster House.
I’m off to order The Devil’s Backbone,an earlier Del Toro film:eek:

……., we wandered round the shop and couldn’t find a thing that we fancied, well, I fancied Pierrepont, having read his biography many years ago, but madam didn’t fancy it at all and I can’t blame her, has anyone else seen this film and can I have the comments please, the casting of Timothy Spall as the dreaded Hangman seemed quite something, will have to sit upstairs and watch it on my own, me thinks.

A superb performance from Tim Spall. IMHO one of the best British actors around today who can portray “the ordinary man”.Strong support is given by Juliet Stevenson as his wife and Eddie Marsan as his best friend.
This is an emotionally engaging and thaught-provoking drama that,unfortunatley,we don’t get enough of today.Unless you see Mike Leigh films of course,for wholm,Spall has worked.
I’m not ashamed to admit that I had a tear in my eye when Albert had to do Tish.This is a cracking film.

PS…..It states that there is a DD 5.1 soundtrack on the disc.Blowed if I could find it!

For those who don’t know ( DOH! ),the film Steve is refering to is Mask from 1985,directed by Peter Bogdanovich.A film which I have fond memorys of but have not seen for a long time.

To order discs from Regions 1,2,3 and 4,I use CD-WOW-highlite dvd and click on multiregion.
Others I use are (for Asian films),DvdFromKorea,YesAsia and CdJapan.
For Region 1,I also use PlayUSA.
Last but NOT LEAST,without these guys I would be a VERY sad bunny,for Region 4……EzyDVD.
If that’s not enough to keep you busy for a couple of days,I’ve got a site for Denmark and Russia if you want them:rolleyes: 😎

P.S. Good old Mr Postman has just dropped The Departed,Region 3,DTS:ES onto my doormat.Shame,due to pressure of work,that I can’t even think of watching it untill Sunday:mad:

P.P.S. Five minutes later he came back and delivered Casino Royale (Region 3 ).Was just going to bed but had to slap the disc in the player and have a flick around.Looking forward to trawl through the extra’s but can’t wait to compare it to the Region 4 Poker Set 😎 :diablo:

Always looking for something different,these DVD’s dropped onto my doormat the other day.

A Battle Of Wits.This lavishly produced historical drama from China tells the complex story of a lone warrior/monk whose mission is to save a besieged walled city from the savage attack of a 25,000 strong army.
It’s a sincere historical mega-production with values that resonate with this viewer 😎

Sinking Of Japan.Guesse what.It’s a disaster movie.The SFX are awesome,backed up with a cracking DTS:ES soundtrack.But it’s too long and makes The Day After Tomorrow look like a classic:rolleyes: .

Do you really think “Joe Public” notices this stuff:eek:

A film that any Spielberg fan, or any film buff, should own. I tried to track down the original 1982 version, as opposed to the re-edited 2002 version, but sadly to no avail, so had to settle for the newer version.

My Laser Disc and VHS versions are the “wrapped in cotton wool” versions that I show to my grandchildren.I’m sure that loads of other foromites have the original VHS somewhere on their shelves 😎
