Sure was.Many cinemas in the “good ol’ U.S.of A” are refusing to screen it before even seeing it for themselves. :confused:
FICTION.Now there’s a word 😉 Way back in 1938,Americans tuned into a radio station to hear the latest offering from The Mercury Theatre On The Air.This episode was titled The War Of The Worlds :diablo: They knew that it was a radio show but STILL swallowed it hook,line and sinker.Bags were packed,cars/trucks were loaded,Highways were blocked and phonelines were overloaded.Maybe THE most powerful piece of radio drama/fiction ever. 😀

Shown on More4 last night while I was at work,I settled down and pressed the play button.
The premise is simple.President Bush is assassinated in Chicago after a speech to buisness leaders while a very large and angry anti-Bush demonstration rages outside in the cordoned-off city streets.(The demonstration scenes are very convincing.They reminded me of central London demo a few years ago.I should know.I was there.)
If you think that this film is some sort of left-wing wish fullfilment fantasy,seeing Dick Cheney being sworn in as the 44th Presedent of the U.S. should be enough to dispell those thaughts.
This is,remarkably,an apolitical film,with depths of subtlety and twists that are as logical as they are unanticipated.IMHO something that only the British have the proper distance and the finesse to pull off.
I’m gonna watch this quality docudrama again a few times over the next few days.It’s being repeated on Sunday,so if you missed it this time,it’s well worth the time to catch up. 😎

It’s well known that Scorsese draws on a selected pool of actors(his Mum included),so it seems DiCaprio has joined that august list.
I was also very happy with Ray Winstone’s performance too,doing what he does naturaly,one of the best “hard men” around IMHO.With hindsight,he would have fitted in soooo well in Gangs Of New York.

Nobody does gangster movies like Martin Scorsese! The Departed is an awsome return to form.It’s like an Irish Goodfellas,only this time inside a police department.Taking place on the streets of Boston (but filmed in New York),the film involves Damon and DiCaprio,two State Police cadets whose lives take different directions.Damon,who is actually an informant for mob boss Nicholson,is made Detective.DiCaprio is put into a secret unit of undercover cops and is assigned to infiltrate Nicholson’s gang.Soon,both men realise that there’s a rat in their midst.
The first hour,Scorsese dedicates to his two rats nestling themselves inside their respective positions as informants.Not much happens plot-wise but it doesen’t really have to.We are treated to two great young actors dealing with
two really well-written characters.Damon has a clean cut,office-smart demeanor.He is not a thug.He’s a master manipulator and liar.DiCaprio not only shows a tough,street-smart attitude but also an on-the-edge fear of the situation his character is in.The way he manages to combine fear with hard core balls-out toughness is phenomenal.
Scorsese is a real showman here,stageing gritty scene after gritty scene as only he can do it.Whether he has his actors talking with pitch-perfect Boston accents,spouting out brilliant dialogue;or having a guy beaten with a hat-stand,or falling from the window of a six-story building,this is a man who knows a thing or two about tension.Even the comedy he injects into this film has edge,which Alec Baldwin handles the best of anyone in the cast.
This film is all about mood,which brings us to the last hour and a half where rats get weeded-out and things really begin to heat up.A one-on-one conversation between DiCaprio and Nicholson in a bar.A scene where DiCaprio and Damon just listen to oneanother breath into their phones,fully aware that they’re listening to the other rat on the end of the line.
The Departed is made by master craftsmen,from it’s director to it’s actors.Is this the Irish equivalent to Goodfellas,only time will tell,but one things for sure,this is one of THE best films this year 😀

barrythemodHad a great night last week, watched John Carpenters The Fog and The Thing one after the other. now they are what i call good films. 11 out of 10 the both… 🙂
