So is this the same restorer that David Burke mentioned who had mislaid it or is it still mislaid by someone else?
Must be wonderful to have a big enough property or enough stuff to “mislay” something like that.

I was told by a then employee that an enthusiastic collector of classic cars mislaid one of his collection in the mid 80’s. They were all in running order but were kept at several different locations and one car appeared to have gone missing. I never did get to hear if they managed to find it again.

Seem to remember some discussion amongst the artists about a tug. We came to the conclusion that it was a non working exhibit.
about 15 years ago I visited with a friend from Revell to ,take measurements for a plastic kit and we were told TA634 would be undergoing ultra sound surveys to look at the viability of returning her to airworthiness but nothing seemed to come of it so I assume that there were glue problems.

I hadn’t seen the original thread beofre. It is great to read such a vivid and honest account of a misha[p that could hav had tragic consequences both for the “pilot” and potentially people on the ground as well.

Channel Airways were pretty early carriers in the package tour market. When they called for passengers for departures to places like Le Touquet, Avignon, Paris and Perpignan it seemed a very exotic world away from Southend to a 13 year old spotter who hadn’t even made it to the Isle of Wight!

Good to see you have such a great spares holding and are putting some of it to good use.
I had hoped to visit as the Guild of Aviation artists had a trip to MAM a couple of weeks ago and I was going along for the ride ( I can’t draw and have just about got the hang of pointing a camera). We had persuaded the driver that a diversion to Aribase and 963 was a good option but in the end 2 of us were so short of money that we didn’t make the trip. Next time – hopefully!

You could argue that any offensive military aircraft has the same potential, the sole purpose of a Lanc, Halifax or Sunderland was to destroy or kill.

I fully expected someone to reply along these lines and fully accept that as a valid point but the other way of looking at is that it is possible to appreciate the beauty of any aeroplane in flight regardless of its original purpose.
I suppose you can fire blanks from a gun but then it does seem that to many gun owners the sight of the destruction caused by firing the gun is as important as the gun itself.
Each to their own but owning guns is just not for me.

Sorry – never had any appeal whatsoever. To me the sole purpose of a gun is to kill someone or something. I can understand that people are in awe of their power and I can appreciate the workmanship and complexities if some of the designs but it is just not my thing.

IIRC Newark had a nibble at the last Carvair as well but the required timeframes were too tight! 🙁

Sorry to hear that. Had I have been more heavily involved in preservation at that time I knew someone who might just have been able to get the use of the museum car park even then which would have borrowed some time for Newark to get their end sorted. It could also have been worked to give the hotel and roller rink some local publicity as saviours of the last Carvair. Much more positive than the article the paper had to run about the end of the last one.
In those days there were comparatively few buildings on the other side of the road so towing a complete aircraft across from the airfield would probably have been viable. The Beverley came straight across the grass from the end of the taxiway!
It’s amazing how the internet has managed to make it easier for interested groups to get in touch. Had it not been for the internet and this forum it is almost certain that a certain HS748 would have had no chance of a reprieve.

Good to see the mossie outside again 🙂 remember last time we moved it

The talk was that this was intended to be a one time only move so I was very lucky to be there by pure chance.
I did offer to send the museum copy pictures for their website but it was made quite clear their archivist would be along shortly and would be taking all the pictures that they needed. The pleasant lady in the gift shop asked me a little later how much I intended to charge them for pictures to put on the website. I was happy to tell her that the offer came with no charge as I would have been more than happy to help a group who put in a lot of work under difficult conditions.

Great little set. I have a 20D too, capable camera!

Thanks. I bought the 20D because it seemed better built and better value than going for a new lower spec Canon with a plastic body. It is taking a bit of getting used to after 30 plus years using film cameras. If my film cameras were like flying a Tiger Moth then the 20D is a bit like the Starship Enterprise with loads of buttons and modes to learn. I have made a few real howlers along the way but it is getting there and at least the mistakes don’t cost a fortune in wasted film even though I have managed to mess up one or two unrepeatable shots.

Brendan O’Brien used to take off and land back on a 30ft plus artic trailer in a Super Cub. I only ever saw him do it once and that looked hairy enough.
Mid air hook ups particularly between two aircraft of significantly different sizes must be a very dodgy proposition fom the point of view of wake turbulence. Throw in some wind and air turbulence and it must become downright dangerous at best.

Maybe they should do what they have done at Charles De Gaulle – roof over the M11 and reinstate the full runway (we can all have a dream!). Considering the total cost of building the M11 it seems almost penny pinching that they were unable (or unwilling?) to divert or tunnel the road to save truncating the runway in the fIrst place.

Unfortunately in the days when all the Freighters were scrapped we didn’t have such a diverse number of properly established museums as we do now and there were few (if any) in a position to take on a Freighter.
We lost the last Carvair in the UK because the Southend museum (who had at least offered a space in the car park as a last resort) had closed and no one else appeared to want it. It is very sad that opportunities were lost to preserve some interesting work horses with loads of character but regretably the same thing still happens and will continue to happen as there isn’t enough money, space or workers to go round. It is the old story of we just can’t preserve them all.

As we seem to be struggling just to pay for the groceries at the end of each week there is no way I will be taking out a subscription to watch F1 on Sky.
The Beeb have done a great job with their coverage but I don’t feel inlcined to watch half a season so it will be goodbye F1 and I will find something more constructive to do on a Sunday afternoon than sit in front of the television so in one way Sky will be doing me favour as the garden will probably land up looking loads better and the car will get cleaned more often.
I am a bit surprised that the sponsors are happy with this situation as they pay shed loads of money to put their names on the cars and the new arrangement will definitely reduce the audience so I assume the value of each car as a mobile billboard will reduce to reflective the reduced audience exposure (oh look – there goes another flying pig).
As far as I can see the losers will be the fans and the sponsors but of course there is one little man who will inevitably come out of this with an even fatter wallet but then expanding one mans wallet appears to have been the main raison d’etre for F1 for a long time now.
Of course I will still have the option of watching the BTCC coverage on ITV. The racing is more entertaining although some of the drivers do need reminding that circuit racing is meant to be a non contact sport.
