I am genuinely surprised you are only “working on it”. Surely all you have to do is fill in the form and send a nice donation!! Does your hesitancy imply a lingering doubt…..?

    Probably bedridden.

…it will be the salvation of this once great nation. Think about that.

I thought about it, and it boils down to wistful ********. When was this country great, in your opinion?

You can reply to more than one post within a single post. Also, what is with the formatting here? Nobody uses the quote function when replying to a thread but uses the tedious ‘RE#’ syntax, yet you can make four or five concurrent posts?

Anyway, RE 74, ‘grown ups’ don’t fall for UKIP’s reactionary, paint-by-numbers guff, so take a leaf out of your own book.

It’s a long, hard slog to the sunlit uplands which we may never reach, and competing politicians do the gullible amongst the elctorate no favours by holding out panacea solutions. They may well be sucked in, but only to become even more disillusioned later.

Nah, I reckon John will be dead by then. :very_drunk:

    Re 77

Don’t teach Grandma…… (If you want the full quote I’ll oblige)

See the Rules of the Forum on the use of quotes.

I saw the rules, and they said:

If you want to post replies to multiple posts you can select them by clicking the multi quote button . This button will change to indicate that you’ve selected it. Clicking post reply will then bring you to the full editor with all the posts quoted.

Nothing about using some idiosyncratic syntax to refer to individual posts. Maybe back in the mists of time this forum had a BBS-style layout that lacked the functionality to allow the quoting of posts, but the rules seem pretty clear here. There may be an argument that it makes things easier for the mods by forbidding quoting, therefore they only have to delete a single instance of a dodgy post, but I see nothing in the rules. Perhaps you should read the rules yourself, before adopting such a patronising tone.

You don’t understand the use of the noun ‘syntax’.

Wrong again. Now I appreciate this will all be a bit ‘past your time’, but surely you’ve encountered the concept of computer programming? Maybe not!

    Syntax (n)
Computers – The grammatical rules and structural patterns governing the ordered use of appropriate words and symbols for issuing commands, writing code, etc., in a particular software application or programming language.

Computer Science – The rules governing the formation of statements in a programming language.

    Keep up!

    Leave our Marigolds alone !

Is there no limit to the reach of the EU tentacles ? It seems (D. Tel. report) that protective gloves known widely as Marigolds and other plastic goods have now, according to a new EU diktat, to conform to new EU wide standards of strength, flexibility and er, ‘rubberiness’ !

I shall ignore your attempt at droll humour for just now. Your beloved prophylactics are covered by EN ISO 4074:2002 Natural latex rubber condoms – Requirements and test methods (ISO 4074:2002). Without such standards there would be a proliferation of sub-standard and poorly manufactured prophylactics that would lead to a spike in unwanted pregnancies and STD transmissions.

Likewise, I imagine standards on Marigolds (and no, I’m not going to go on the Torygraph web page to find this non-story) are in place to prevent sub-standard rubber gloves reaching the market that would either dangerously impede the wearer through lack of flexibility or possibly lead to chemical burns or other injuries by being made of the wrong material. This sounds a lot like your beloved common sense, no?

Also, you don’t understand the use of the pronoun ‘their’.

I’ve never heard of that title: “Any dictionary published in the last thirty years”. Who is the publisher ? I think you invented that.

The correct definition of syntax: “The way in which words are arranged to form phrases and sentences to convey precise meaning”.

There you have it, simple. No connection with computer programming other than in the minds of the semi illiterates who try to blind us with (computer) science.

I find it somewhat ironic that you, a user of an internet forum, decry the discipline of computer science as being the work of ‘semi illiterates’ yet happily note that excessive quoting causes problems for the website ‘in ways that I do not know’. I can only assume you lack the intellectual curiousity to actually find out why.

The funny thing here is that your post isn’t even offensive at this stage. You’ve asserted, wrongly, that the word ‘syntax’ has a single definition. This is blatantly incorrect. You’ve also suggested that computer programmers are ‘semi illiterate’ (is that the same as semi literate, and where do the two overlap?), yet I wager you couldn’t produce any scripting in Java, C++, Python or even produce basic SQL queries. Ironically, your ability to do anything on a computer is only possible thanks to the same semi ilitterates you seem to take issue with. You are probably already foaming at the mouth at my use of the word ‘scripting’ in the previous sentence.

No doubt your beloved Nigel will be removing all computers from the school and workplace and replacing them with slide rules and the abacus in a bid to restore ‘proper values’ or something.

    “restore proper values ?”

    That’s never going to happen.

By the way: Never use a preposition to end a sentence with or, to put it another way; never end a sentence with a preposition.

Does your computer have a spell check facility? Do you know how to use it ? I can offer a free tutorial ?

You forgot to preface your post with ‘RE 104’. Try harder.

It is quaint that you imagine computers have a built in spell check ‘facility’. To answer your question, I am using IE7 here, which does not have a spell check ‘facility’. Both Firefox and Chrome do, but have not been validated for the machine I am using. I suppose I could draft all my posts in MS Word to check for spelling errors, but you are not worth nearly that much effort on my part.

I forgot about BMW’s ugly phase. That front end did them few favours.

Have car drivers always been as clueless about the dimensions of their vehicles??:(

Cars have steadily increased in size over the years. My parents’ house, constructed in the ’60s, has a garage suitable for a Morris Minor. My father tends to drive the Volkswagen model that represents the ‘Golf plus a boot’ model, be it the Jetta (’80s), Bora, Vento or Jetta (current). What he has found is that every iteration of this design of car has grown bigger. The new VW Polo is now as big as the first generation Golf, and VW have had to introduce the diminutive Up! and Fox models to fill the void at the tiny end.

As for drivers, perhaps the introduction of bigger cabin interiors and crumple zones creates a detachment from the surrounding environment that leads to careless driving.

    Re 263,

I thought you were generally in favour of personal liberty? What is the issue here? As far as I can tell, breasfeeding is only an issue because people wrongly sexualise it. I don’t feel sorry for those that feel embarrassed to be in the presence of a breastfeeding woman. That is their problem for them to overcome, not the fault of the mother. If anybody can demonstrate that there are ‘attention seeking earth mothers’ then please do! I’ve seen no evidence of this, and I do go outside once in a while.

I wish the BBC would stop giving Brand airtime. They did the same with Ross, under the mistaken belief that today’s yoof will tune in if these clowns are allowed to speak.

Which is not, incidentally shared in every country.

A very good point. African cultures view the West as having collective mother issues over our pervasive obsession and sexualisation of breasts. When you consider it rationally, there is no reason to sexualise breasts, as they serve no reproductive function. Common sense and good manner don’t come into it, as these are entirely subjective concepts, and I don’t see any rights being violated here either on the part of the embarrassed parties. My right to not have to be in the same room as a woman breastfeeding? Laughable.
