There will not be anything else with the Vulcan effect. With the best will in the world the Shackleton when displayed 20-30 years ago used to be the time when people went to get a drink or have a wee.

I think a few posters, yourself included, are getting overly hung up on prevailing (or perceived prevailing) attitudes of those golden airshows of the ’70s and ’80s. The Shackletons were old, archaic, and slow, compared to the rest of the RAF arsenal. It wouldn’t have been either a historic or most cutting edge aircraft back then, just lumbering and noisy, so I can understand why it was overlooked. I found a clip of one displaying at Strathallan, and I would love to see that in the flesh, personally. Enough time has passed for one to be considered both historic and interesting.

No Tutor or T2 pair next year. This has raised some eyebrows, as these demos (as much as frequent spotters abhor them) present a tangible gateway into the RAF for kids and teenagers. You start off here, and then go here. It seems a shame really.

Well there were elements of all those things, but not in much of a cohesive order and with a worrying body count stacking up throughout. The gaps and flaws in both sides’ defense were stark, and golden opportunities were fumbled.

You were obviously watching a different game!

The Namibia/Georgia game was a bit of a rabble. The first half dragged on for 67 minutes. It seemed that the ref basically let five minutes of mess carry on, then call a halt to it and pick apart the various offenses. Many injuries, several fights and a good dose of collapsed scrums.

I don’t think there is anything that will replace the Vulcan due to a couple of factors. Most obviously, the Vulcan loud and visually stunning. Secondly, there was a lot of publicity tied up in the aircraft. Obvious stuff really. I don’t see any other projects commanding that level of attention and self promotion. The Shackleton is probably the closest, and the project I’m rooting for, but that was an aircraft that spent a lot of time out to sea and out of the public eye. Nobody rolled one at Farnborough to rapturous applause.

Sadly I think that is the best of the bunch. A flying pair of Mosquitos will only interest hardened spotters. I imagine it will receive the same sort of response as the Blenheim did at East Fortune this year; interesting, but not the fastest, noisiest, biggest, oldest or most agile of the lot. I’m saying that as somebody with a soft spot for both designs as well! I think a lot of the responses in this thread have been a little too academic. favoring wee biplanes with barely a cult following as a worthy replacement to fill a Vulcan-shaped hole on the airshow circuit? Other suggestions seem to rely on long ferry flights or masterpieces of diplomacy. Would Russia ever lend us a Bear for a season? I don’t see it, as much as a Typhoon Interception role playing demo would more than make up for the lack of Hawk T2 demo next year.

Wildcard suggestion, but I would love to see an Antonov AN12 display. They sometimes go through Prestwick, so it isn’t beyond the realm of possibility.

‘Gracious in defeat’ is clearly a concept that never reached Uruguay. It says something if a team of pacific islanders look positively placid by comparison. Thankfully Fiji have been hammering them into the ground.
