Just catching up on this thread since my last visit and noticed with some joy on Duxman’s second photo in post #2204 there is Torquil Norman’s DH90 (G-AEDU) in the background presumably nearing the end of its own restoration. Just the cheat line on the fuselage side missing?
My interest in this aircraft is only that I made a sport-scale model of it a couple of years back but nice to catch up with old friends!
Ah! I see it has been! That’s what happens when one arranges shortcuts direct from the browser… the target can be moved and you can still hit it!
The wonders of modern technology!
Another wonder is that the Short Stirling has now flown.
A partial record of the event is captured in this video…

Hope you enjoy it!
It was the ‘Norwegian Wings Over North Weald Fun Day And Fly-In’
You must have stumbled upon the ‘fun’ part!?
Now that there is a dedicated RC and models section wouldn’t it make sense to move this thread to the new area?
I have a 60″span Meteor F3 for sale, but I wouldn’t think of it as being to museum standard. It is a lightweight RC flying model, powered by two pusher props on electric motors in the tailpipes.
You say no internal detail is required, but what about the detail in the rest of the model?
I can easily take the radio equipment and power system out if you want the model.
Okay, for Ben and others…
I have put a few photos out on other forums so only fair to post here too.
Close to first flight time now – in fact it would have happened already but for a stupid blunder in the workshop which resulted in the frying of the on-board radio system.
Since these photos I have added the gear doors but am awaiting supply of replacement parts at the moment.
WOW! I bet that sounded phenomenal!
So the country gained nothing in revenue and the public gained no static airframe to view as a reminder of what it had gone through – only the scrap value was retreived by someone… sounds like typically inflexible officialdom doesn’t it?
Did nobody haggle on the basis of the actual value of an airframe no longer fit for purpose (flying) ?
Was some kind of payment asked for the aircraft ? Presumably HM Customs had their own view of what it was worth in order to levy a tax on it even if not.
When I tried to see what was on the events page all I got was
“Our events pages are currently undergoing some updates and maintenance.
We thank you for your patience whilst we carry out this necessary work
and hope to have the pages back on-line as soon as possible.”
– Nice timing.
From dark rumours I have been hearing recently it seems that the words ‘Military’ and ‘logic’ are not particularly good bed-fellows T-21. Not to us ordinary human beings anyway.
But if other rumours are correct there should be some flying of LMA B-17s going on at some stage.
I would welcome a little feedback on the OW meet T-21 – I was going to go and fly there yesterday but the gusting with that wind direction makes for uncomfortable flying for lightly loaded models in the lee of the trees so I saved my money. (Shuttleworth charge we who provide the entertainment just the same as those who go to spectate – maybe they just don’t think they can afford logic?)

Well so much for my powers of observation!
Perhaps I haven’t looked for them before… I must have looked at half a dozen photos from a similar angle – although not of such good quality as Tim’s.
Thank you again Tim – and gents all!
Roger, I can tell you why the step-down… A number of Dragon Rapides were lost to fire and a design change was made in the Dragonfly to re-site the fuel tanks in the wing in stead of immediately behind the engines. As a consequence the inboard section had to be thickened considerably… and only one Dragonfly was ever lost to fire.
Tim, thankyou – what a boon an extensive library is! I thought they looked like they could be venturis, the inner tubes are visible in one of the photos – but that still left the question ‘why three?’
So the reason the aircraft no longer has those features is either that Mr Norman had no wish to do blind flying or that modern instruments are electric powered. (or perhaps both).
I would still be interested to learn where the restoration was done if anyone can tell me. Some photos of the work in progress would be very informative.
Thanks again gentlemen.
Robin
Thank you Haavalds. Nice to see the progress… but rivets? I haven’t the patience!
So one model approaches completion and another gets retired… and I’m STILL building the Stirling!
What is going to replace the B-17 Steve?
Here’s an idea of the size of the beast – it’s hard to get it all assembled in my workshop and still move about to work on it. Should have built a bigger workshop!
Tail section is 72″ long (from main spar back) and tailplane spans 47.5″.
Looks like it should be captioned ‘You should have seen the one that got away’!
Thanks Elliott, a good day indeed.
I was slightly thrown off balance because neither aircraft were turning left over Ware to go cross country as most bound for Harlow do so I assumed ‘from DX’ rather than ‘to North Weald’. Neither was the course of the Vampire suggestive of it having come from Old Warden. Both seemed simply to be VFR on the A10.
Both aircraft have very easily recognisable and characteristic sounds though.
