The Mosquito is a MK VI, one of a batch sent from the UK and used by No1 Sqn RAAF, was HR335 before delivery, built as part of a batch by Standard motors between 16/6/43 and 17/12/44. Looks as if it had made a single engined landing with the left unit feathered.
No 1 Sqn were based on the Halmaheras (wherever that is) and Borneo.

The very best of luck with this application. I am surprised the Planning officer has made a statement at this stage. I believe his job is to collate the package of evidence and hand it to the Councils legal team who make the judgement with advice from the Head of the Planning Department. The Planning officer should be unbiased.
If the evidence is good then you get what you want, if it not you will be struggling.
You can appeal to the Planning Inspectorate.

Hi all, MH434 arrived at sandown airport about 1500hrs today. Its doing photo shoots tomorrow with Extra redbull racer piloted by Nigel Lamb. Spit pilot is Paul Bonnehom, i think! !

    Steve.

Saw the two together yesterday afternoon, heading north over Alton in tight formation. I wondered what they were up to.

According to the Putnam Book ‘Shorts Aircraft Since 1900’ the two halves of the composite operated together during 1938, including 350 tons of Pre Christmas mail to and from Empire destinations, then in March 1939 Imperial Airways fell out with the Air Ministry and Mercury was out of use for over a year. In June 1940 it was passed to No 320(Netherlands) Squadron for use as a trainer until scrapped in August 1941.
So if seen at Khartoum it would probably have been in 1938.

When you say reports quote the the composite as being seen at Khartoum, is this referring to just Mercury or both Mercury and Maia together as a composite.
Mercury made several trips to Africa, being launched by Maia at this end of the flight over Southampton. Did Maia tag along later to get Mercury airbourne for its return trip, or meet it part way back?.
Cruising speed or the two aircraft was similar but Mercury had huge range when launched by Maia.
I have a date of 9/08/41 for Mercury making its last flight to Rochester. And Maia destroyed by bombing in Poole harbour on the date garryrussell quotes.

G-BDFF was powered by 1 x CONTINENTAL MOTORS CORP IO-360-C according to G-INFO. I have a feeling it less than full size, ie 7/8 scale which would preclude the use of the proper Napier Lion.
I remember seeing it display on several occasions, including Greenham Common.

When Mick Mannock was killed he was flying with a New Zealander named Donald Inglis, a novice that Mannock had taken under his watchfull eye.
I have a book ‘The Aeroplane Speaks’ which all new pilots were encouraged to buy or were issued with im’e not sure which, that belonged to Inglis. Its signed Donald C Inglis N.Z.E.F 2/8/17.
Inglis Had trained in the UK with a distant relative on my wifes side, a C O Stone, an Australian, and before they parted to join their squadrons their books had been exchanged, by accident or design I dont know.
Sorry if its a bit of a ramble but someone might find it interesting.

hi, i have a very good friend who in the late 1980s/early 1990s.

who found a complete aileron from a hawker typhoon, lying on the surface at litchfield, a town north east of birmingham city, UK ,I think ,

i met someone else who jumped down into a ditch there to take a pee, who bashed his knee on a “Armour Plate” from a typhoon there as well,

now i know there was a major scrapping operation there, many moons ago,
But my question is, 1= Does the site still exist and does anyone remember which fields it is in?, and 2, is anything left?, and 3 ,if there is a possibility of anything left, who would be keen on doing a magnetometer survey over th site (permission permitted) with me ,some time in th future ?,

The Curborough motor racing sprint circuit is located just off the A38 road between Burton on Trent and Lichfield. Around the Circuit are areas of old concrete and the bases of old buildings and nearby are MU type hangars dotted about, these are now used for industrial prposes. It certainly looks like it was the site of a MU.
Be nice if a few bits of Typhoon were to be lurking there.

An F.E.8 would be great, only a pod for a fuselage, biplane though so needs alot of ribs. Extinct other than a replica in the USA I believe.
Engine wise a replica would be the best bet with an electric or small lawn mower engine to spin it. Static only of course. The museum at Farnborough might find it a home as that is where its birth place was.
Wish I could see myself having time to spare for the next ten years.

    All the best

I doubt Lasham have records as the engineering company that is there now, took over from DAN AIR engineering when that business failed. Could ask them I supose, see their web site http://www.atclasham.co.uk/

I do recall visiting Lasham about then, the only B170’s present were one painted in Lambair colours, just prior to its delivery to Canada and another ex RAE/A@AEE Boscombe Down which was there for scrapping.

I too was a bit puzzled by the picture, no sign of any damage other than one main leg being retracted or missing, even the nose gear door is still on the leg.
The aircraft is sitting in a puddle which is understandable if it had been just pulled ashore but how were the wings folded up.
I assume Scimitars had hydraulic power folding.
