For £300 you won’t get any better than the 35mm SLR, especially as you got a 300mm zoom lens with it as well. I agree your scanner lets you down, so does mine. To get the best from your film pics I’d suggest a dedicated film/neg scanner. I’m going to get one soon so that any pics I post are as fully detailed as I can make them.
Digital cams need to be upwards of 5.0 megapixels to really compete with traditional SLR’s and you’d still need to get an SLR style digital to reap the benefits of decent glassware on the front end.
Other than that I think you just need to brush up a little on your compositional skills. Easy for me to say I know, I do it every day for a living. Try and fill the frame a bit more with the subject and cut out less of the scenery, unless of course you intend to feature the scenery purposefully as part of the composition. I know it’s difficult taking plane pictures a lot of the time with the trouble finding good vantage points that aren’t miles away from where you want to be.
Basically your pics are good, it just takes a bit of practice to make them even better. Have you tried doing fast shutter stuff of take offs and landings ? This is what I enjoy the most as you can often capture the drama of flight in an interesting way.
With your Nikon there should be a “sport” mode on the preset dial. Try using that in decent light with 200 or 300 asa film. If you can get a good spot near the end of a runway you’ll get some really nice stuff. Just follow the planes and snap away. 😀
