I see you’ve wasted no time in updating your avatar after we woz robbed on Thursday Bhoy ! Nice choice of replacement too. As for the alleged “riot at 30,000 feet” it would appear now, with the benefit of hindsight, that declaring a full emergency may have been a tad uncalled for. But hindsight is a marvellous thing. In the heat of the moment the captain was well within his rights to get the plane down as quickly as possible as have the culprits dealt with.

I think the guys who caused the trouble where old enough to know better and deserve to be banned from Parkhead, put on an airline blacklist and have the full force of the law applied to them. These kind of events have repercussions and usually end up affecting the people and associations who are innocent bystanders in it all.

My cousin and her husband were travelling on the flight, both respectable professionals, not yobs. They also agree to be surprised the incident unfolded in such a dramatic fashion. As far as they could see it was nothing more than a very heated discussion and a bit of shoving around. Not that this is in any way acceptable behaviour on a plane of course. And as I say, I assume the culprits will be dealt with suitably by all parties concerned.

I think the means to deal with a terrorist on board should come from within the passenger cabin and not the flight deck. If terrorists are hell bent on getting into the cockpit, then after 9/11 it’s fair to assume they will be intent on taking over and crashing the plane. I don’t think the days of politically motivated or asylum seeking hijackings are over, but I think anyone daft enough to try one can expect to be treated as a 9/11 style hijacker. Basically I mean that no matter the motive for a hijacking, then I would, as a passenger assume the worst and try to do something to stop it.

Personally it’s a situation you don’t ever want to be in, but keeping weapons off of planes is a good start. If it comes down to straight fight between meagrely armed hijackers and cabin load of passengers of the assumption they may be about to be flown into a building, then I think the “overpowering” option will be the most effective. Yes, people will get hurt, but the other option is a sure and certain death for all on board.

Sky Marshals may be a good idea, or maybe not. Locking the cabin doors may be a good thing, or maybe not. I think keeping the flight deck away from the hands of hijackers is possibly of vital importance now. And as wysiwyg says, hijackers will resort to any means to get in there, even killing cabin crew and passengers over the interphone. But as horrific as that would be, it would be worse for all concerned if they got into the cockpit and took over the flight as we witnessed on 9/11.

My last BA short haul was Glasgow/Gatwick in October and it was the first time I felt unimpressed by the service. We boarded our 737-300 and left on time. During the inflight safety demo, I happened to glance out of my window to catch and marvel at the sight of an AA B767 touching down in the rain (well who wouldn’t ?) This resulted in a stern telling off by the cabin stewardess next to me and some frosty looks from the rest of the passengers. Not that I’m in the habit of ignoring in-flight safety briefings you understand.

Thinking I was in the bad books, as the filty looks continued throughout the journey, I was a little miffed to discover I was deliberately being served last with the inflight refreshments. I actually got up to look and the cabin crew had served everyone from the back of the plane to the row behind me and from the front of the plane to the row in front and beside mine. I was in a row of 3 seats, occupied by just myself !

Naturally the choice of sandwiches was the usual meat or vegetarian selection, but lo and behold they ran out of my preferred option. I settled for a bag of some unidentifiable crisp-like snack and a wee tin of Stella Artois.

All this for being unable to resist the lure of a passing silver bird splashing down in dramatic weather conditions !!!!
