Neither of them have been sold…
And from what im told, there are large holes in the airframe and certainly in no state for a return to flight.
So in a nutshell. Hopefully this post won’t disappear?
Matthias Dorst. The man. The legend. Great to have you back!
There are 2 in germany think – the green bremgarten based one (was it Nowotny markings?) and the ex Duxford based silver fish as she is now known. Recently repaired after a gear collapse?
Had the Catalina over rainham Essex, heading south to I assume was Biggin hill.
Lovely surprise as I thought my airshow season was done!!
I’ve been going to Duxford airshows for about 25 years now, and I love the place. The M11 end is great for pre-show activity, and the tank bank is the place to be on airshow days. It’s always busy at Legends, and on days like last Sunday where there’s a massive crowd, but more often than not I’ve found it quite easy to find a space a few rows back, which I much prefer to being squashed along the fence or surrounded at the top of the hill. Each to their own I suppose!
Looking into sun for a fair bit of the day has never bothered me, you just deal with it. It’s hardly the IWM’s fault…
As for last weekend, the IWM made it quite clear that there were c.2,000 spaces left in the Meadow car park, and warned that there would be heavy traffic. My friends and I were staying 20 minutes up the M11 and were up at 6am, arriving at the Meadow about 90 minutes later. Shortly after, the car park was full and they were turning people away. Not ideal, but quite an extraordinary situation for Duxford. I bailed during the Reds on Sunday and drove straight out, no snags.
Normally I drive straight in between 8am and 10am and, after a post-show wander, drive straight out around 6.30-7pm. Until this weekend, it’s been about a decade since I experienced really bad traffic chaos at Duxford.
Echo what Elliot has said.
My rule of thumb, is arrive early and leave before the last act.
Never had any problems doing it this way.
What disgusted me this weekend was the amount of freeloaders on the hill on the other side of the airfield. I was at the m11 end for a change, and at one point on Sunday afternoon there were 4 guys where the civvies aircraft usually park just causually strolling down the perimeter of the airfield unchallenged!!! If the IWM do put out these notices of trespass, somebody should bloody enforce it!! Fast becoming a joke.
Other than that – a cracking day out as per usual. Apart from the retard in the RV who nearly ripped my wing mirror off!!!?. Wouldn’t have minded, but for such a large vehicle there were only him and his mate in it!!!
Now back in Canadian colours
I thought it was Rhodesian???
Looks like a fantastic bit of airmanship there from the pilot!!
Top effort. I’m sure the damage will cost a fair bit to rectify but shouldn’t be huge.
That’s the German me109, Buchon and now sea fury within the last year that all managed to get down safely. Top job by all!!
One of the things that stood out for me was his complete enthusiasm and excitement to be there, he was absolutely thrilled on the Sunday to see a Lysander fly for the first time (I’m sure you can identify with that JDK!) and to witness the Balbo. His obvious knowledge of the subject was clear to all who listened. And yes Dave, I did catch the mention of your forum too.
I seem to be in a minority here as I rather like M.Chabbert’s unique take on things, and I missed his Gallic tones this year. To me it is all part of the overall Flying Legends experience. Having said that a change now and again is no bad thing, and Trevor and Peter did a really great job. As someone has previously noted though, a quick mention of who was flying what would have been most welcome. Hopefully things will be back to normal next year and Bernard will be available, things just weren’t quite the same without a mention of ‘mechanical sparrows’ and how the French won the Battle of Britain by softening up the Luftwaffe beforehand! 🙂
Have to say I thought Aussie Pete was fantastic. Really knew his stuff, but more importantly when and when not to speak.
My one thing about the day was although both star items (p40c and p26) we’re absent from the display on Sunday, i didn’t really miss them??? I thought the flying was on par with some of the best flying I have seen at legends – with what seems the aircraft getting lower and than they have for some years.
I did nearly **** my pants when the hawk did that cough though…
… or could the interesting noise be a ‘re-engined’ Buchon? It is still listed as attending the show.
I saw the Buchon through the arco workshop door as I was leaving duxford yesterday lunchtime.
Couldn’t tell if it had an engine fitted or not to be honest.
Unless Roobarb is willing to share some inside knowledge??? (Pretty please!!!!)
And now all 6 buchons including the 2 seater
The forecast for Thursday/Friday in particular looks bad, especially over mainland Europe. Hope that doesn’t affect too many visitors. That said, the forecast for Waddington was pretty terrible (rain all weekend was forecast at one point!) but I ended up coming away with sunburn having not been rained on at all during the flying display hours. Just goes to show you can never put too much faith in the weather men…
I’m rocking up on Wednesday, sure it’ll be a cracker whatever happens!
A real mixed bag when it comes to the weather – some forecasts predicting cloud with rain, others predicting wall to wall sunshine with a high of 28celcius!!!
Have faith. It will be alright on the night!!
Right you ‘orrible lot, now you’ve done dribbling over the P40 and getting carried away with Spitfire moon porn, can we get some sound advice, (based on experience rather than arm chair supposition) to the following.
With the imminent arrival of the masses for Leg-ends, is it better to pay on the day or in advance (is there still time) and for a car arriving from deepest Essex, is the Cambridge ‘park and ride’ a better option than parking on-site.
“Thanks awfully old chaps”
Just get there nice and early (say before 8am) get in – find a nice spot, have a wonder around the museam and bobs your uncle.
Never fails.
What a line up????!!!!
I think you’ve doubled the number of aircraft, take a look at the Duxford participation list its 26 aircraft and if the connie, avenger and Lightning drop out its the same old, same old line up.[/QUOTE]
Hmmmmm
Can’t please everyone….
Regardless if it’s the same old lineup – unless there has been an amazing amount of restorations, it will always be quite the same. Unless you want the fighter collection to sell all of their aircraft and replace them every year, then that’s what is going to happen!!
I can think of at least 8 aircraft I have yet to see on that list. I mean where else will you see a p26 within about 5000 miles??
Thing is, nice as the aircraft are, Hangar 11 Collection can be seen at many other UK shows of all sizes throughout the year. Personally, I prefer to see European warbirds at Legends over some of the UK based machines simply because you won’t see them elsewhere in the UK, and if you see them in Europe, chances are they won’t be flown in such an impactful way as they are at Legends (IMO). Shows like Hahnweide often attract things like the Jacquard warbirds, but display regs mean they are higher and far more distant than at Duxford. So if it’s a choice between them, I’d always go with the lesser seen aircraft.
To completely contradict myself, I would love to see a little Hurricane gathering at Legends again…
I echo what mr marsh says about the hurricanes. I’m sure next years 75th anniversary of the BOB may see such an event.
Without drifting the thread somewhat – does anybody have any updates on the thruxton and Hawker restorations hurris?? Would have thought at least one of the 3 may have flown this year….
Finally it looks like she is gonna fly!!!
Are you allowed to say if it has a new owner??
