Nothing to do with the country being on a critical terrorist alert???
Nice picture Mark and one I’ve never seen before, LF363 is in her late 1950’s early 1960’s scheme with the codes US-A seamingly taped on, notice the incorrect position of the fuselage roundel, it’s to far back. No LF wasn’t in Angels One Five but if you wan’t to see her in this scheme (minus the codes) she has a part in the film The One That Got Away.
Speaking to Paul Day and Shinney Simmons at BBMF a few years ago they agreed that the baby Spits were the best handling with the Mk.Vb being prefered over the Mk.IIa, this was because the former had metal ailerons and the elevator horn balance was of later design. They said that the Mk.IX felt heavier and was not as agile. Griffon Spits look sleek but are brutes to fly by comparison.
Can’t make out the serial but the photo was taken at High Ercall in Shropshire in 1942
This photo is published in the BBMF’s 2007 brochure in which “Stapme” has written the forward, so in answer to the question yes it is “Stapme”
She’s OK now as she flew over my house in North Staffordshire at 17.30hrs en route back to Duxford:D
Yellow!!! It just looks right dosn’t it, superb images:)
Indeed Daz surely one of the aviation magazines could set up a meet of twin seaters, Duncan Cubitt could get some good air to air shots. I’m surprised this has not been done in the last year or so as there are four Tr. 9’s flying in this country (I know PT462 is a late convertion from the 1980’s), we should of course wait until G-AIDN is airworthy in Britain first as it is the Daddy of twin stick Spits!!!!:)
Best news this year, well done Peter you have brought an important piece of the Spitfire story home.:D 🙂
Happy birthday
Thanks Lee I didn’t know that.
Whats more is I hear that the Comet is going to get an RAF sceme as well:mad:
