Well, taking her apart in the US is too expnsive and letting her be taken apart elswhere might allow detailed study of her design but non-US powers, what else can there be done cost-effectively and safely but sink her as an artificial reef?
What I find interesting is that Johan de Wit has davids for its assault craft! This is in addition to dock. Which suggests more assault craft and 2 size of assault craft per mothership.
Compare ship data…

and here de Wit http://www.scheldeshipbuilding.com/lpd.htm
Still, the gun at top, first post, is porbably a reshielded AK-176, which may also be lighter.
@Petros,
I don’t think the helicopters are included in the deal and as for the Phalanx CIWS the four frigates that are most likely to be in the deal don’t have The phalanx installed!See the links below:

Elli and Limnos has 2x Phalanx and 2 76mm. Remainder has 1x Phalanx and 1x 76mm. Unlikely these systems would be uninstalled, but if they are, they are easily replaced by US foreign military aid issue systems.
Not so sure about inclusive organic helicopters. In Dutch service, they operate Sea Lynx, in Greek service they operate AB 212. PN is a Lynx user, switch to AB 212 wouldn’t make much sense IMHO. Maybe neither of the two helicopters will used. Instead, Chinese Z-9 may be adopted (would give compatibility with new F22P ships)
A view from India.

Well, I doubt the PN fleet will be expanded much. We’ll see replacement of 6 ex-RN Type 21s (Amazon) and 2 Type 12s (Leander) with something newer, maybe a small expansion from 8 to 12 ships. Not a whole lot more. Maybe 4 ex-US Perry class, 4 ex-Greece/Dutch Kortenaer class and first 4 home built F22P. That’s qualitative and numerical improvement over current assets. PN doesn’t need to be much bigger in terms of major surface combattants.
Thats the point I made! Its not a CIWS system but with RAM it would offer a useful level of defence.
Its not a manned mount but remote control. Good for close-in work against small surface targets and overflying jets (Argy/Falkland style)
Niedersachsen, Karlsruhe and Bremen temporarily fitted with 1 30mm Goalkeeper CIWS from 1991 to 1993, all other units also had provisions for Goalkeeper.
Since the RAM system took so long to materialize, these ships spent the whole 1980s without a point defense system, but could have been fitted with the british/dutch Goalkeeper system if necessary. Only 3 ships ever carried Goalkeeper for a potential Persian Gulf deployment in 1991. RAM finally arrived in 1993, giving these ships a very good point defense system.

excusez moi, post double
I’m sorry, I can’t afford a navy no more ……
According to ARMS-TASS agency, Baltiyski Zavod has finished production of boilers for Vikram. The boilers are upgraded KVG-3D type, working on Diesel fuel. Anti-corrosion treated steel is used for tubes as well as non-asbest isolation.
It will be interesting to follow the work on her, may give some clues as to what’s possible for the chinese w.r.t. Varyag.
Pakistan to acquire four frigates from Greece : PM
ATHENS (GREECE), May 15 (APP): Greece will provide four frigates for the Pakistan Navy, two of which will be delivered this year, Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz said Monday.
The two countries are looking forward to stronger ties in defence and security related matters and have agreed on the deal, Prime Minister Aziz told the media team accompanying him on his four-nation visit.
Without giving details of the deal, he said Pakistan was acquiring used frigates.
He said two frigates would be delivered this year and the other two in 2007.
The Hellenic Navy uses Elli class frigates and the same would be provided to Pakistan.
Pakistan has been acquiring defence equipment from various countries to meet its defence needs.
3 questions:
– Can anybody confirm this is a done deal? Or is it still in the negotiation fase?
– I’ve seen 2 (Elli, Limnos only, with greece keeping 8, of which 6 to be upgraded) versus 4 ships (Elli, Limnos, plus 2 ex-Dutch navy ships, with greece keeping and upgrading 6) quoted, which is it?
– what wil Pakistan be paying?
Folks,
In this whole debate everyone is forgetting that old saying: Amatures discuss weapons; experts logistics. Does anyone believe that the PLAN or the IN can substain a carrier task force at sea for long? Refuel and Re-Arm it and protect the tankers and supply ships from home port to the CV location? Many consider only two navy really capable of that over the long haul in blue oceans: ie the US Navy and the Japanese Navy. Remember when the Russians sent their one carrier into the Med during the Kosovo Crisis the US Navy had to help them with fixing their fresh water plant and teaching them carrier landing skills. It is a culture. India has some great warships, but does it have the culture to operate ships for long periods at long distances? No one today says that about China. At least as far as I know or have read.
Jack E. Hammond
Good point. In this respect, the IN has an advantage over PLAN since it has been operating carrier(s) for quite some time. It is probable it has more of a culture of operating ships for long periods at long distances than the Chinese. Whether this culture is comparable to that of the USN of Japan? Hard to tell. Interesting you are not mentioneing the Brits and French in this contexts…
how about the new project 21630 border guard boat?? At least in the newest weyers book (on page 698) shows rather funky new 76mm mount
100mm mount on board the Buyan/Astrakhan

It is not a stealthy version of the A-190(E), e.g. as being fitted to Project 20380 corvettes, since this has 2 doors on both sides of the turret.
Rather, it looks much more like an AK-176 with a new housing.

Bon Homme can be translated as Good Man or Pretty Man.
… in the Lampegat maybe :diablo:
does anyone know what SAM & other missile systems that are on the UN-MODERNIZED version of the Elli (S) class?
Sea Sparrow, Harpoon. That’s it.
