I’d prefer if they decided on a 9000-10000 ton KDX-III style long range air defence destroyer/cruiser design with 80/96 cell VLS, 32 SSMs etc instead of the 7000 tonnes or so currently planned.

Sticking with the Delhi hull design makes the P-15B somewhat redundant as a destroyer since it’ll be only a few hundred tons bigger than the P-17A frigates(Even the Shiwaliks are over 6000 tonnes, not much smaller than the 6900-ton P-15A destroyers).

You might see something like the Spruance/Ticonderoga combo (or Spruance/Kidd/Ticonderoga trio, if you like): variations on a shared base hull. It will be about which role is emphasized.

So now the LCS ships are just a bunch of purpose-built 3000-ton minesweepers and PT boats? They’d be spending their money better by just buying some 500-ton mine hunters and frigates from a European design.

US Defence Procurement never ceases to amaze me with how it botches up its projects despite having access to better funding and technology than any other military in the world.

I’m amazed: how can the LCS-2s take Bofors 57mm but not Oto 76mm????

Chinese frigate ‘aground on shoal’, says Manila

Good ploy to put a whole bunch of vessels into the area…

It was on the edge for the old Baku. It’s just that the deck was extended on both sides. I wish the Navy comes up with some use for all that space on the right of the superstructure; it’s more than enough to park a few MiG-29Ks.

Yeah. I don’t expect the Indian Navy to follow the Soviet ‘aviation cruiser’ doctrine, but I wish they’ll at least give all their carriers a proper air defence fit. And I don’t just mean Kashtan, Barak or AK-630. I mean a few modules of Barak-8 for a medium/long range defence against SSMs.

I also wish the Vikramaditya had a sonar suite go go with those large radars. The old Gorshkov had one, but it was removed during its refit and I haven’t heart of a new one fitted.

CGs show never more than three Kashtan, mounted high up in the front of the superstructure and port + starboard beam. Which is where I expect Barak + guns to end up. Superstructure has obvious STGR locations. There simply isn’t room for a heavier fit (nor is there a need, if part of a group)

I thought a basic AD fit was part of the contract?

Consisting of a pair of Kashtan systems, judging from various CGs. However, as evident from latest 11356’s (e.g INS Teg), I don’t think IN wants any further such systems. All other new ships have been receiving AK630 + Barak + Elta STGR. And, it would make sense to remove Barak from Viraat upon retirement and reuse it. That ship has 2x AK 230 and a pair of 40mm Bofors. Would not surprise me in the least if Barak/STGR ends up on Vikramaditya.

    …. just yet.

Barak + AK630 + EL/M-2221 STGR can easily be backfitted.

Sounds like P17A will be moving to P15A size or larger still P15B… might merging of the two projects yield some efficiencies?

I think both USN LCS classes took that title away some time ago.

    Wanshan,
After another look, I see six fire fighting units to cover the flight deck. 3 on the island and 3 in the area you mentioned. I think there is one more for a total of 7 units, and one near the aircraft landing aid.

Yep … and they are all RED 😉

I have done some work (not much good) to illustrate how I would like to see the Pr.1174 getting modified/modernized. My illustrative skills are very limited, so I worked only on the front flight deck. But hope it gives a basic idea on the modernization.

    The modernization gives/intend
New flight deck extending to the bow
    2 x landing spot
    increased parking area
full length hanger extending from the stern to the front flight deck
    Helo capacity increased to 6-8 x Ka-27/29/31/62
    1 x 152mm A-192

And others, namely AD assets like Palash & Ak-630/630-2…. any suggestions?

Not sure what you mean by ‘full length hangar extending from the stern to the front flight deck’. This wording suggests the hangar is below the flight deck, while in reality it is located at the level of the flight deck in the main superstructure (serving flight decks at both ends through 2 sets of doors).

I see you’ve raised the forward flight deck by 1 deck, but the space below isn’t at the same level as the original hangar. In the original, there is a ramp forward of the main superstructure going down one deck, from hangar to flight deck. So the hangar is inside the main superstructure, at the level of the rear flight deck. If, in the modified ship, the hangar is below the flight decks and going from stern to just short of the bow, how is transport from the hangar deck to the flight deck organized? Installation of an elevator between the new hangar deck below both the forward and aft flight decks, taking the heli’s up inside the main superstructure into what used to be the hanger (but what is now a staging area). If no elevator solution, I don’t quite see how you’ve increased hangar capacity from 4 to 6-8 as the main superstructure in which it is originally located remains unchanged.

The ship accommodates four helicopters. Landing parties can be air lifted by helicopter. The helicopter hangar is located within the superstructure. Helicopters can be brought out of the hangar through two exit doors, one leading to the helicopter landing pad forward of the superstructure and the other to the second landing pad behind the superstructure. Both landing pads are equipped with helicopter refuelling and replenishment stations.
