Can some one tell me why people are still purchasing the KA-27 is it any good – shouldnt they be looking for something else. Harbin/ Lynx/ Dauphin 2
What’s wrong with KA-27 in your view?
Mate you sound like it’s killing you- still kids will do that to you!
SURGEON GENERAL WARNING – WORK CAN BE HAZARDOUS TO YOUR HEALTH 🙂
point taken, when u first talked abt escort air-defence was topping my mind. But, do u really think that IN have that much fleet strength to have both P-17 & P-15A to give escorts to CBG? Because, P-17 simply won’t be able to provide the air-cover and a larger combatant like P-15A is required. IN is really very short on primary combatants and if all the available are deputed to CBG escorts then nothing will be left…
Sorry, but what else should they be deputed for? Land attack? plz.
You got 3 P15 with 3 P15A on the way. You got 3 Talwar, with 3 on the way. You got 3 P17 on the way, with a tender out for the subsequent – propoably more AAW oriented – batch.
P15, Talwar and P17 share by and large the same main SAM and all contribute to the umbrella at this point. That’s 9 ships. P15A and likely also P17A will have longer ranged SAMs and will be relied on more in future. That’s 6+ ships.
Considering the need to cover at least 1 and maybe 2 CBGs, that would seem sufficient for AAAW needs.
To this you can at 3 Brahmaputra and 3 upgraded Godavari class frigates P28 ASW corvettes and maybe even Kora/Kukhri ASuW corvettes as possible CBG escort forces.
76mm do have higher rate than 100mm, and Russians do have their 76mm with 120rds/min rate of fire as well. As for ur remark of less modern shell, I don’t think its something that can’t be procured from other sources…
There is no russian equivalent for the Italian multipurpose ammo as yet.
Ammunitions for the Oto 76mm include:Multirole pre-fragmented HE-MOM and HE-PF-OM, semi-armor piercing HE-SAPOM, semi-armor piercing extended range HE-SAPOMER, pre-fragmented and new Course Corrected Anti-Missile Shell CCAMS, DART sub-caliber, guided projectile .
are u mentioning the P-17 class?? ….. but for the CBG escort role, she got very few medium-ranged missiles and lack any long-ranged missiles. So the question arise, whats she good for? With a smaller caliber 76mm, naval GFS is’t much to talk abt either.
Mainly ASW of course. And in order to do that credibly, she also has to have sufficient AAW self protection capability, to which a 76mm Oto contributes more than a heavier, slower training and firing Russian 100mm, the munitions of which are probably also less modern and effective in AA-role than those of the Oto 76.
Shhhhhh don’t tell Iran we already have their plane here in the west 😉
Whoops, nearly gave away one of our best kept secrets there :p

Mate as long as you are ok that’s all that matters!
Still alive 😉
FCS for Kinzhal is 3R95. The target acquisition radar on it just looks like Podkat. Topaz is a separate entry and Podkat is a different radar as well, although the antennae look similar.
Confusing as this is, but OK. Which of these appear on Udaloys? Illustration pics please.
I have thought about the T-45, but it’s weapons load is rather small and developing a higher load with more capabilities (AAM’s, ASM’s, Bombs) would probably cost as much as developing a new plane- give what the US are like with their military equipment and sales to over seas customers.
In fact there were plans to develop a T-45 with more of a weapons range back in the early 90’s- this was for the RAAF LIFT requirement which saw the Hawk Mk-127 bought instead (much better choice if you ask me). So if Boeing wish to seriously consider that option (which may also go well in fleet service with the USN/USMC), then dig up those plans that MD had and run with it.
Another option I had thought of- and I know I’m labouring the point here- would be the ATG Javelin, I know from my mail updates from the company, that an armed version is in the works as well as a Carrier capable one should a customer be interested. Now if you ask me, ATG should not wait for a customer to express interest, but build one and get out there with it to generate sales. I realise its a costly adventure but if you don’t have something people can see, no one has any confidence in your products and won’t even think about it when discussions are held for replacement aircraft.
Why, it’s the twin tailed F-5 version made by Iran!? :diablo:
Wan? Mate, where are you?
Sorry, got a big load piled on my plate…
Besides, her main role will be carrier battle group escort (rather than land attack vessel)
That is the 3R95
Topaz and Podkat apparently are the radars which both goes under the NATO reporting name Strut Pair, am I right?
This pic shows two Strut Pair on an Udaloy, one on each mast. Hi-res here (second to last pic)
Have I correctly understood that 3R95 comprises Podkat (rotating back to back dual parabolic antennea at the top) and Cross Sword (slab planar antenna at the bottom)? Or is the whole complex 3R95 referred to as Podkat in Russian and Cross Sword in NATO parlance?
Anybody?
1,000-ton “carrier killer,”
Chuckle….
(Nice play of words on PRC ballistic missile ‘carrier killer’)
Right . . . . so have the Russians been plying him with floozies, fine champagne & Bolivian marching powder to keep him sweet? :diablo:
Ah, doncha love these ancient traditions?
They probably have. The question is whether it had any effect.
Sao Paulo may retire with the Skyhawks. She’s an old ship. I think she could, in theory, operate Rafale, but only light. The only potential replacements I can think of which could operate at full weight are a naval Tejas adapted for catapult launch, Sea Gripen, or a Goshawk-ised Hawk 200 – and none of those currently exists.
A Hawk-200-ized Goshawk would probably be the easiest route.
