Looking beautiful. Any idea of the time-scale for completion?

It really is looking fantastic – very high quality workmanship. Well done to the team at Northern Aeroplane Workshops.

If you search Google Books and find De Havilland Mosquito : An Illustrated History by Ian Thirsk you get this –

However Mossie.org lists KA102 as an FB.21 though it also states that the FB.24 was developed from that variant.

I can see why there might be some reservations over allowing youngsters to do this sort of thing but they are probably safer doing that than sitting at home on some of the social networking sites or worrying about how they look, what they weigh and the myriad other stresses of life as a youngster today. Better an introduction to adventure; an experience they won’t forget and which will begin a long and happy relationship with flying ( inside or outside the plane) and historic aircraft.

Clicked on the link expecting to read a story of wanton vandalism by a gang of disaffected youths. What I read is if anything even more shocking. Sad, sad story.

    Talking as we were of’Insensitivity’
As Australians, Kiwis, Canadians et.al all had a very significant part in the last ‘big event’ and as they seem to me to be singularly under-represented in the RAFM (especially when compared with the USAAF), the RAAF Hudson should be left as it is.
    My thoughts anyway
    Bill

Sorry if I caused any offence with that suggestion. You are, of course, absolutely right in what you say. I was suggesting it merely as a temporary measure to act as a representative until such time as funds allowed for the recovery of this genuine RAF Hudson.

Well, I did use the word pleasant and I stand by it, as there are no RAF Hudsons in preservation. To find one is still around is a pleasant surprise regardless of the tragedy of the circumstances. There’s little to remember Stirling crews by, I’m glad there’s an opportunity to preserve and remember the Hudson and those who flew them.

    If that sounds insensitive? *Shrug*

Yes. I do actually agree with your thoughts if not your wording 🙂 I expect it would take a lot of funding to recover/ restore/ preserve the Ben Lui Hudson and whether the funds are currently available – well, I’d be surprised. Perhaps, in the meantime, the RAFM may be convinced to do a repaint of A16-199 to represent an RAF aircraft. It was originally intended for RAF use as FH174 after all.

I’m sure ( or I hope) you didn’t mean that how it sounds as I certainly wouldn’t use the word pleasant in there. Lying on the mountain like that, the Hudson is a very poignant memorial not only to her own crew but to the many airmen who have been lost in similar circumstances over the years.

That is a very interesting website but note that the survivors list is far from exhaustive. M.18 G-AHKY survives at East Fortune; Monarch G-AFJU left last year for restoration in France, I believe; Monarch G-AFLW is stored somewhere or other in England; Magister G-AHUJ is probably still stored at Strathallan; Messenger G-AJOC is in Ulster and I think there are a few survivors abroad – Hawk Majors in Madrid and Chile, for example. I don’t believe any Masters survive however:(

Is this film going to be made? Seems a lot of effort if not.
BTW anyone care to dream up a suitable cast?

Well Colin Firth has to be there either made-to-look-younger as Gibson or made-to-look-older as Wallis.

Fascinating website! Very well done putting it together. Hopefully one day there will be a happy ending to the tale.

Mosquito definitely. Also the unique survivors of their breeds – Desford, Miles M.18 and GAL Cygnet – which were all airworthy with the Strathallan Collection but would need a change of policy with their present owners to see them grace the skies again.

Very pleased to read this news. There is a real lack of historic helicopters in airworthy condition so very well done to the restoration team.
