I think the reason that Leuchars works is that it is accessable by different means of transport and the local roads are quite good. Good road links to Balado but no train. Prestwick is a bit far for non enthusiasts and Lossiemouth the same.

How times have changed – back in 1978 Strathallan drew 25,000 spectators over 2 days to a small airfield with no rail or bus links and which lies on a B-road. While there was certainly an excellent museum to look around I would say there was no ground based entertainment at all and only a few stalls selling aviation-related items. I guess people’s expectations have changed over the years.

Possibly the “anti-cavorting chain” (like a king-sized dog lead,) which attached to a belt then clipped into a ringbolt in the floor, as in the Swordfish. If the belt broke, there was nothing else to keep him in.

Are you serious? That is terrifying!

Just a thought but, if it’s the crowd size that is the problem, would a display have to be held at an airfield? Are there regulations which would prevent it being held at say Balado? The T In The Park music festival caters for more than twice the size of the Leuchars crowd; the setup surely isn’t much different – traffic management, emergency service availability, etc – all things which are there at the festival. The farmer doesn’t seem averse to renting out his fields for a noisy event and the location is within easy reach of several other airfields for refuelling/emergency purposes. It is just a suggestion but would that kind of scenario work and be acceptable to the authorities?

Bentine’s book is very interesting, though I won’t comment on his belief in spiritualism. Perhaps the most interesting bit is his role in WW2 (eventually, having been nearly arrested for desertion by the same military who refused him as a Peruvian citizen, and then being nearly killed by a dodgy batch of antitoxin) as an Intelligence Officer on a bomber squadron.

If you do find a copy, do please refresh us on the Elsan story therein!

I’ll do that, Adrian. It really does sound quite a fascinating read!

There was the so called “Mull Air Mystery” when a Cessna 150 disappeared after taking of from Glenforsa airfield on the island in 1975 leaving its dead pilot on a hillside to be found several months later, but with no sign of the plane until divers found it in 1986 – See: http://www.glenforsaairfield.co.uk/3.html and several other sources no doubt with the aid of Google.

Yes, that was the one! The fact I couldn’t recall who, when, where or what didn’t help with the googling bit! Must admit I thought the incident was earlier than that but that was obviously a memory glitch ( along with all the other details). Thanks for that.

Thanks to all who are posting replies. Still interested to hear other stories too.

Wonder what happened to the one held at Scone a few years back?
I fear foks from north of the border will have to head south to Sunderland now for a decent airshow. East Fortune can’t fill the gap left by Leuchars unfortunately.

I don’t think there has been a display at Scone for at least a couple of years now. The last one I was at there was not particularly well attended which may have something to do with the decision not to hold another. If I remember correctly there was not a big attraction like the Red Arrows or any current military craft so it was only enthusiasts who really turned out. I remember being at one of the Scone shows probably 10 years or so back and it was a real family day with a small fairground to entertain the youngsters and a great selection of aircraft. Hopefully the folks there can come up with something for next year. I guess finance could be a problem though as it must be expensive to host a show.

    Sorry!!!

Is it just coincidence that Propstrike posted the story of Michael Bentine of Goons fame while you posted about Rhubarb (Rhubarb, Rhubarb)? Apology accepted nevertheless!

A really interesting story, Propstrike. I wasn’t aware of Michael Bentine’s history other than him being a comedian. Must get a copy of his book.

The main reason I asked the question was that I have a vague memory of an aircraft taking off from one of the Hebrides islands and never reaching its destination. It was featured years later on a tv programme about mysteries at which time it was still missing. Unfortunately can’t remember much more than that! But it set me wondering about other planes that may have had similar fates over the years.

I seriously hope they can or that some other place steps in to fill the gap because we are starting to get starved of airshow action up here (i.e. Scotland). Maybe Montrose with its strong RFC history will stage something for the centenary of the First World War. We can but hope.

Some good shots from the Leuchars Show in today’s Dundee Courier-

What’s the plane in the 6th photo down with the crowd around it? Early-model Mustang?

Please excuse my ignorance – not being much informed on such things, would the Serial No shown apply to the part type or to the particular aircraft onto which it was fitted? I was wondering if it possibly came from JV404 – the Wildcat which crashed on Bennan near Newton Stewart in 1945. Just a suggestion as it’s not a million miles from your location.
