Can someone please say and describe what has been found. I’m outside UK, so iplayer is no good. Thanks all.

Basically the two Dorniers were flying out of Toulouse on an anti-shipping patrol in July 1944 but got lost on the return flight and collided over the Pyrenees. The eight crew members were killed. The Resistance who operated in the mountains feared they would be blamed for the crashes and set about hiding all evidence down a very deep cave. Nobody spoke of it for years after that in order to protect the local community. There are quite substantial remains (50 kilo chunks are mentioned)but not enough to consider a rebuild and parts are to go to museums in Berlin and Southern France. Wing sections, an oxygen tank, ammo and a cockpit part with writing still legible are talked about. The recovery has however caused upset to some locals who have memories of the time.

Thanks very much both. Yes, definitely Staverton – 10th row down middle photo of Magister is taken at almost exactly same spot as the Ebay photo.

    Hi again,

Just a thought – which may be wide of the mark – but is there any possibility of it being an SAAF Blenheim? Any go missing during service in East Africa? It would certainly have to be well off track but such things have happened. Or were any of them civilianised post-war?

    Hello Shaharom,

I’m afraid that I cannot help you in your quest. However I agree with your sentiments with regards to the crew and wish you success in finding their families. Your efforts are to be admired.

Continuing to tweak the photo a bit- the number 402474 is preceded by the letters ..st.
The top line looks like possibly PAT A CA ?

I have tried to enhance the part in the last but one picture (a casting with a square hole and a round hole) but cannot make out the numbers. Can someone with more skill try it for me? Thanks

Best I can come up with I’m afraid.

Middle line almost certainly 402474. Hope that helps – the suspense is killing me 🙂

Any idea what the army plans to do with Leuchars anyway? Will the runways be ripped up or built upon or left as they are? What about the hangars?

Without wanting to drag the thread off its interesting course the chances are that the vast majority of ‘missing’ aircraft went down in the seas around Britain. That being the case then there are many opportunities for inclusion in this thread listed on the Runnymede memorial.

It was specifically civil aircraft I asked about for that very reason Snafu. I figured that to include military would indeed open the floodgates!

Not forgetting the Duchess of Bedford who went missing in 1937-wreckage never found and various stories/theories etc
as to what happened? Wreckage found off the Norfolk coast at about the same time but as far as I know not positively identified as coming from her aircraft?

What an interesting history she had. I hadn’t heard of her at all but her biography is now on my book list too. Thank you.
Amused by the Wikipedia article which states that she found flying helpful for her tinnitus. I think I’ve got a touch of that myself – hoping the Doc will prescribe flying lessons on the NHS 🙂
