Indian Express:
CCS approves purchase of warships, missiles for Navy

New Delhi, July 6, 2006
In a move aimed at bolstering the Navy’s fighting potential, the Cabinet Committee on Security on Thursday approved the purchase of three more Russian stealth warships and 28 submarine-fired cruise missiles.
The three Russian Krivak-class frigates would be acquired at a cost of Rs 5114 crores. The first one would be delivered five years after the signing of the contract and the subsequent two within 12 months after the delivery of the first warship, Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee told newsmen after a meeting of Cabinet Committee on Security chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
Mukherjee said the purchase of the three Russian frigates was a follow-up order to the purchase of three of the same type of warships in the late 1990s. Indian Navy has already inducted three Krivak-class warships that were re-christened Talwar-class.
He said CCS has also approved earmarking of another Rs 400 crores for “certain other equipment” for these stealth warships.
Though, he did not elaborate, highly placed sources said the funds would be used for fitting the new frigates with BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles.
the huge Granit’s tech was leveraged for Yakhont. once they get something working, the Russian bureaus (with India eagerly watching over the shoulder and taking notes ;)) have a vast experience in producing derivatives.
if necessary the SLBM sized tubes could be fitted with adapters or inclined tubes used amidships to house Granit sized missiles on IN ships and future SSGNs.
jmht.
Sferrin, separate rules apply to those with and without nuclear muscle (doesnt matter if this muscle is homegrown or donated by the US’s largest asian trading partner).
US cannot touch NoKo and Pak. it is trying to ‘control’ Pak thru bribes. NoKo is also surely being offered inducements to control its behaviour.
Given the dismal success of such a strategy in the past, I am none too hopeful. also hope you noticed Soko is drifting away from the US orbit into the Chinese one. ethnically and culturally they are closest to the northern chinese also. Soko people really want to help NoKo economically – I dont think a food freeze and mass starvation in NokO has any takers in Seoul.
maybe the Akula lease is just a cover to the training of indian staff for the domestic SSN project and all sorts of help provided by Russia for that. after all shipping “spare parts” for the leased Akula to India isnt going to cause as much notice as for a new vessel.
hopefully the spare parts will include a few truckloads of SS-N-21-mki 😀
GPS + INS is useful for hitting at fixed targets whose co-ords are known before launch.
I dont think anyone but the US has tested continuous update to JDAMs GPS targeting module for the air in-effect permitting the “network” to go at mobile targets even with JDAMs. iirc a F-18E/F tested this a few months ago.
Moving targets will need a IR seeker, laser designator(limited to line of sight range) or a MMW radar.
welcome to afghanistan gentlepeople. 5000 A-10s wont make a whit of long term difference so long as the Talibs and Al-Qaeda have a entire neighbouring COUNTRY to disappear into for R&R and recruitment.
Last I heard preparations were on to equip said country with 96 F-16s armed to the toenails with AMRAAM and HARPOON missiles to provide “close air support” to GWOT …. bwahahahaha :diablo:
if I check this thread after 25 yrs will hear the same laments – more people, more a/c , more money and more sacrifices needed…with Osama still issuing his quarterly taunts via video.
the Aus proposal doesnt show a 3D radar on rear mast and a smaller mast for comms and EW gear. I doubt the picture shown would be how it finally turned out. every new-gen ship has a 3D search radar for backup.
“the US stands for the pursuit of peace, freedom and democracy worldwide” – :diablo:
France is building Mistral class amphib ships and the Italians have a few too. I dont see why EMPAR + ASter30 + Aster15 cannot deal with Block52 F16/P3 + harpoon @ Karachi.
the PRC which is buddy-buddy with Ukraine on multiple projects would likely be most interested in these new developments.
on the barak vs Spyder cost – they will buy more radars compared to barak system for distributed deployment with smaller number of missiles in each site.
sure its Leh ? could be Thoise ?
this deal is solely for IAF bases defence against everything from treetop level GLCMs to medium alt aircraft.
A new long range SAM is reqd for both IAF and IN. IN has Barak2 in pipeline, maybe IAF can also hitch a ride. and Akash should be inducted to get rid of the SA3 / SA2/ SA6 types in service at present.
pretty brahmos sized plume. cant they use smokeless stuff as in most current AAMs – afterall these are carrying the amraams and micas upto mach4 today.
