by that yardstick all of IAF and IN and IA armour is useless. and what is your contribution to stopping the flow of green paint across the border 🙂

under the indian funding model (daft if you ask me) capex funds cant be carried over into the next yr. unspent funds go back into the central pool on April1 each yr. so the IAF isnt being smart “saving” cash for MRCA – they will need yearly allocations to pay the installments and the selection and purchase appears to be years away at this point. the RFPs havent been sent out yet !!

the two radars have been deployed for many years. they monitor all missile test and air activity out to the afghanistan border.

I doubt the radar is final at this stage. depending on whats *really tested and available* when the program gets underway they can decide.
Mig29 needs better cockpit, AAR and radar. its prolly to expensive to replace the engines with new gen rd33 for the time they have left.

a subsidiary of snecma named hispano-suiza has supplied some bearings, seals and turbine blades for kaveri prototypes iirc, but snecma havent really been involved in the engine design and test process…else it would be finished by now.
hispano-suiza supplies certain components for M2K and jaguar also I think.

Iran will soon face years of sanctions interleaved with periodic bombings of war making and nuclear facilities. in a decade’s time when their economy has collapsed and public is fed up, it will be ripe for regime change.

there is only one way out for them. stage a nuclear explosion like the north koreans did and publicly say its just a accident at a gas plant for the media. satellites in the hands of foreign powers will reveal the truth for those who need to know.

    > talking about an uprated and TVC version now

one has to view GTRE statements with a bucket of salt. their credibility within the indian defence complex is rather low at this point. they have never really delivered a single product that entered service so far (some of it is not their fault, blame can also be given to armed forces and govt for inadequate willingness). some people claim they have misled the ADA (Lca people) on the true state of the kaveri for a long time now.

A third party audit as by P&W will reveal whos who but sadly given the nature of our “official secrets act” I doubt anything will be made public.

imo they should get the thing done before shouting anything – good or bad. Stealth Spy , its inappropriate to start these kind of threads before any real product emerges. You should consider removing it.

the P17 is hardly the ideal platform to soften coastal targets. you need a gun cruiser with two 155mm guns and a Smerch-N battery with internal reload. some of the plan ships seem to mount short grad style MLRS tubes.

actually in early 2004 they had almost decided on a single vendor choice of M2K-5. then the Govt changed and to avoid any allegations of corruption they decided to have a open RFP with multiple bidders. So far they havent even managed to issue the RFP … supposed to “happen by march” .

India says no to US P-3C Orion aircraft

    Rahul Bedi (IANS)

    New Delhi, February 2006

In a rare ‘no’ to Washington, the Indian Navy has called off the leasing of two US Navy P-3C Orion maritime reconnaissance aircraft (MRA) on grounds they are too expensive.

The 18-24 months it would take the US Navy to retrofit the two aircraft to the Indian Navy specifications once the lease had been finalised also contributed to New Delhi opting out of the deal.

“The lease (of two P-3C Orions) is timed out. It was expensive and time-consuming,” a senior Indian official associated with the lease negotiations said.

The US Navy is believed to have demanded Rs8 billion for the lease via the foreign military sales programme.

the “real” reason is probably the extreme alacrity with which 8 P3 were supplied to our dear friends for free. but we’ ll never know for sure.

but they are well maintained and they can do heavy overhaul to replace worn out parts. the machine is reliable , not a single crash in 8 yrs with the IAF.

this was posted by stealth spy in august 2005. kinda makes sense now.

MINSK, August 22 (RIA Novosti) – Belarus will start purchasing new combat aircraft after 2010, a senior Air Force officer said Monday.

Major-General Mikhail Levitsky, the deputy commander of the Air Force and Air Defense, told journalists: “Modern aircraft have a service life of 25-30 years. After 2010, we shall start purchasing new warplanes. We are currently thinking about purchasing Russian-made aircraft and helicopters that can be modernized.”

Levitsky said it would be practical for Belarus to fly multi-functional Su-30 (Flanker) fighters.

“This is a reliable plane capable of providing air support and delivering strikes against various targets and troops and transport facilities deep in the enemy’s defenses,” the general said. “It is two to three times more efficient in terms of combat power and combat use compared with Su-24M (NATO reporting name Fencer-D) and Su-25 (Frogfoot) planes.”

“The Belarusian Air Force will operate Russian-made Il-76 (Candid) medium-range military transport aircraft until 2015,” Levitsky added. “After that, Belarus will purchase new modified transport planes in line with its state rearmament program.”

Belarus intends to purchase Il-76MF planes instead of Il-76MD military transport aircraft. The Il-76MF has an extended cargo hold and increased fuel efficiency. The aircraft is outfitted with a navigation system, which meets the requirements of the International Civil Aviation Organization, Levitsky said.

Belarus also intends to purchase An-74 (Coaler) military transport planes to replace An-26 (Curl) aircraft. The An-74 can carry five times more than the An-26.

The Belarusian Air Force and Air Defense are also considering buying Russian-made Mi-28N (Havoc) multi-purpose attack helicopters.

note the caption says “breaking the concrete wall (no warhead)”. guess they wanted to study the impact point and not a pile of rubble.

they are existing and newer than most of the Jags. a more powerful ground attack cannon I think for chewing up soft targets. and a higher escape speed perhaps.
