Not sure at the moment – probably a bit unlikely as it will involve marshalling across the taxiway. We do have the area fenced right up to the runway threshold so you get pretty close. Unfortunately, Southend’s not ideal for spectator events but we do our best! Also if we did that, everyone could watch without paying to get in which would rather defeat the object!
Wimborne = Felicity & Giles Irwin – ’tis where they live!
The cockpit is XM602 – on loan from Woodford. Colin Mears moved to America some years ago selling most of his collection of stuff another poster on this topic!
Ysterplaat – December 2005

Cr*p weather!
They are probably practising for the Ysterplaat show on the 3rd or possibly the Bredasdorp show this coming weekend.
I stand corrected – forgot which order my fingers went!
It seems that in the absence of any official and unofficial record they are going to attempt to do the 9000m climb in under a minute to which the only response is “bleedin’ hell”. A friend and I are popping down there for the weekend so I’ll let you know how it goes!
If it brings money in it helps, but did notice at Southend a Callsign used by the tower which should of been used to the Hercules crew instead of the Merlin.
I noticed that – especially as ATC cleared the Merlin to throw all it’s passengers out regardless of whether were strapped to parachutes or not!
The gloss finish doesn’t last long although we do treat the surface with a barrier fluid which gets in all the cracks! Her third repaint may be a little while off but it is planned!
Not desperately busy – it’s quite civilised actually. In terms of aviation, it’s busy!
Plenty going on at the Airport and the best taxiing shots ever!
Hi Paul
If you head for the car park, which is on the grass in the middle of the airfield, you will get a good howl regardless of the runway in use and you’ll only be 50 yards back from the runway. The layout is not quite as good as Wellesbourne but the central car park does improve things a great deal.
I’m more intrigued to discover how grants from the HLF could possibly end up anywhere else other than in commercial companies’ pockets – isn’t that the idea behind the grant – providing the wherewithall to pay for work which cannot be carried out for nothing?
I can confirm that the Midlands branch of the Vulcan drag-racing fraternity always put on a good show!
We, the Essex ‘chav’ branch salute you!
Oh god, what have I done! 😀
Tell ’em that these days, and they won’t believe you…
