Actually, talking with Doug (who shot the picture)…he says it would be fairly realistic to expect to see the plane at FL ’04 because apparently there is a sizeable team assigned to it and progress is rapid…and will be more so as they get closer to finishing the plane…so it is a possibility that you will see it on the ramp next year at Legends!

Let’s see if memory serves….John Cruickshank at far left, moving to the right…next is Bill Reed, then Walker ‘Bud’ Mahurin, then Johnny Johnson, then Gunther Rall. Reed and Johnson are no longer with us, unfortunately.

Had a chance to meet Rall and a few other folks at Legends in 2000, very cheery lot, he and Johnny Johnson were joking about what kind of plane they were standing in front of, pretending not to be able to recognize it (it was the black Hurricane…Taff Smith’s, I reckon?) They were all fun to talk with, but could’nt wait to get the photo shoot over with and have another Pint…as expressed to us by Bill Reed, God rest his soul….

Summer….summer….hmmmmmm….seems I’ve heard of it….camping, 4 wheeling….unfrozen streams teeming with fish….ski areas melted off and folks mountain biking down the runs…..Large formations of planes flying by at something called an ‘airshow’……Flowers in bloom…..evenings where you don’t need a jacket…

    Sound familiar?

The esteemed Mr. Dumigan SHOOTS and SCORES!! It is, indeed, Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn, with a couple of the kids in tow, at the Aspen Show….I happened to ask Kurt if I could get a shot of him in front of the A-10, and he asked me, “Sure….you just want me or you want everybody?”, so I told him everybody if he could get them all, and next thing I knew he rounded up Goldie and the kids in front of the plane and I had my shot….See what happens when you DON’T use guerilla Paparazzi tactics? They were very nice and chatty, and we almost sent Goldie up in **** Jones’ T-6, but the show was about to start…..

Good lord….they gave you a pilot’s license? Someone in the CAA office must’ve been having a cuppa when the paperwork came through and they mistakenly allowed you to continue flying! Hey, regards to you, your mother Ruth, Malcolm, and all the gang from Legends….Steve tipped me off during our phone conversation today that there were some pics of you on the Key forums, so I thought I’d hunt them down…it’s snowing out here in Colorado, not very good flying weather….hope to see you guys again next summer if our travel plans come together!

The photo shows myself, Steve Bridgewater (middle) and the kid with the black horned rimmed glasses in the photo, Malcolm Taylor….sorry, don’t have a photo of Neal scanned in yet….

I hate to say it, but I don’t think you’ll be seeing THAT particular PB4Y Privateer fire bomber doing water drops (the one illustrated previously)….that plane broke up just west of here fighting a fire near Estes Park, Colorado 2 summers ago and is the basis for the grounding and termination of all Privateer contracts as regards firefighting for the forest service. The sequence of photos run in the local paper the ‘Rocky Mountain News’ showed the whole episode from start to finish as it made its run over the fire. Very sobering……

    Tyson-

Now, those are some KICKIN’ photographs….found myself laughing out loud at the ones with Tucker and the Tomcats, I KNOW he loved doin’ that stuff….probably taunted the Tomcat drivers over the radio, wanting to get into a low-speed dogfight with them…and he probably would’ve won! That’s just the way Tucker is, I’ve known him for 10 years now…he’s a real character.

Great stuff, keep up the good shooting!

Consider, also, if you will, that this is a plane that was specifically designed to be underpowered to simulate the combat loads that a loaded up fighter would carry during the war….they could have easily stuck an R-1820 or -1830 or even -2000 engine on the front to boost the power and performance, but that was not the intent…the intent was to get pilots used to having a plane under them that handled like a dog, so they knew what they could and could NOT get away with….however, that being said…they must have done SOMETHING right with that plane for it to have lasted as long as it has and in the numbers it has. It has been my camera ship on MANY a photo mission and I always love the ride…get up in one if you ever get the chance.

    Ant-

Interest is key….my father has been hounding me for years to write for AP or UPI or Reuters or something, but I tell him that the motivation would’nt be there because I have NO interest in writing about what THEY want me to write about…the two articles that I HAVE had published were both about warbirds (one for Air Action, one for Classic Wings Downunder) and I was SERIOUSLY motivated to write both, just because it was something I really wanted to do….I can’t say MONEY was a motivating factor because I knew I was’nt gonna be paid for one article and I have YET to see a dime for the other…..

Have you seen the recent book ‘Chino’? I forget who it’s by, but I had a chance to peruse it, and it’s just an evolutionary history of one of the great warbird meccas, a ‘how it came to be’ story focusing on the whos and the whats of that great little airfield….maybe Duxford could use a similar chronology? Start with the wartime years as the base for the Spitfires giving way to the Jugs and ‘Stangs of the 78th FG, then go through the after-war years and show how the build up and interest in the warbird movement came to be and where it is now….this would allow you to cover a broad spectrum of subjects along the way (maybe you could put in a few ‘asides’, pages devoted to special aircraft like MH434 and special people like Mark Hanna or Stephen Grey)…special subjects that have REALLY left their mark on historic aviation….that is, if there isn’t already one like it out there…

    Just my 2 cents worth…
