Ok, sorry! So you look for this one?
‘Other development work at Chilton during 1944 was devoted to a low wing side by side two seater, the Chilton Challenger, with Cirrus Minor engine or optional Gipsy Major. No firm decision had been taken as to whether it should have a tail-wheel or tricycle undercarriage, it got a far as a mock-up of the cabin and centre section. If it had been completed it would have resembled the North American Navion that came out a few years later.’

The Day The Sky Fell Down, ISBN 0953450309. Not entirely easy to get hold of now, though I still see it on sale from time to time locally.
Have a look at Amazon or AbeBooks….

Concerning the DHC plate – the same no 1439B appears on skis at a Stinson 108 Voyager http://www.flickr.com/photos/djipibi/2224133769/sizes/o/
According to my info this is a Polish Spad 51 (Jupiter) not a 52. The 52 had a Le Rhone engine. The Spads 29, 34, and 52 are broadly similar aeroplanes and Fonck’s 29 had twin wing struts whilst other 29’s had the more common I struts and a smaller fin whilst the 52 had a larger fin. This being about the only distinguishing area. So yes the original picture is a 29.
John
John thanks for your confirmation!

Well finally a guy in a German Forum got the answer:
SPAD 29

Thank you!

It’s a SPAD 52 .
John
? Only found this painting of a SPAD 52. Different engine ?
There was a suggestion that GXY was returned to the UK and broken up at Perth but there appears to be no hard evidence….. unless someone knows differently ….!
no hard evidence:
‘Sep1954 The aircraft was scrapped at Perth, UK.’
