Some logistical stats of the air traffic control (more like: air traffic chaos) in the Si Chuan theatre of ops, during the first few days to one month, after the 5.12 earthquake.
Just wondering: with the upcoming direct flights between China and Taiwan (which will critically wound the Hong Kong CLK IAP here), and as some airports are shared by civilian and military, doesn’t the PLAAF and ROCAF worry about espionage and intelligence risks at the shared airports?
(Such as fine-tuning GPS coordinates for targetting SSMs.)
Or is this already compromised, decades ago, with the advance of high-definition satellite imagery?
] thats a great front shot
Front shots are IMO boring. Can’t read its squadron code and serial number.
Haven’t seen any photo of the Russian Il-76s at Cheng Du.
OTOH, the PLAAF has organic Il-76MD.
This may explain why I was puzzled when, just a day or two after the 5.12 earthquake, the radio/TV news reported squads of “PLAAF radar operators” (not PLA or WJ infantry) were delivered to remote villages amongst the mountains, to assess the damage at said villages, while hundreds of WJ grunts were mobilised and long-marched to the remote villages on foot.
PLAAF Il-76s and civilian cargo/passenger planes were drafted to deliver supplies to the civilian and military airports in and about Cheng Du, plus Romanian AF, Russian AF, and USAF (but not JASDF) transport planes.
Then, about a hundred civilian and military heloes delivered the people and supplies to the villages. Mostly Mi-171s, S-70s, Super Pumas (HKGFS and others), Z-8s, Z-11s, and only one single Mi-26 with Russian pilots (tasked with hauling dozens of bulldozers).
(BTW, personally, I don’t oppose the proposal for sending JASDF transports to Si Chuan. JMSDF and PLAN warships are visiting each other’s ports, and Jap civilian rescue teams have already worked in Si Chuan. 8D
OTOH, I’d oppose JASDF attack heloes or fighters = offensive weapons coming to China, such as for an air show.)

The deceased crew members’ photos and profiles. <(T_T)
On 10 June 2008, about 10:55, the wreck was found in a jungle in a valley. Phuck.
Heloes couldn’t land at or near the crash site, so ground teams yomped there to recover the bodies.
(IMO, with a Senior Colonel as pilot and a Colonel as flight engineer, reminds me of Star Trek: if not the USS Enterprise with Admiral, Captains, and Commanders as her bridge crew, then at least the borrowed Bird of Prey with the same elite crew.)

“Helicopter carrying 19 crashes in China quake zone”
By CARA ANNA – 12 hours ago
JIULING, China (AP) — A military helicopter carrying 19 people, many of them injured in China’s devastating earthquake, crashed in fog and turbulence, and authorities were searching for survivors, state media reported Sunday.
Two injured miners who had been stranded in Sichuan province’s mountains since the quake were airlifted out Sunday in a helicopter, Xinhua said. They were found a day earlier by soldiers who parachuted into the area and treated them, Xinhua said.
[The helo that picked up the two wounded miners is a HKGFS helo, deployed from Hong Kong. v(^_^)
Also, rumours claim at least four PLA paras were killed in action, but the PLA and Xin Hua have denied this.]
