“Will the Joint Strike Fighter Be as Successful as the F-16?”
March 30, 2006
Remember America’s P-39 “Aircobra” or the all-purpose Messerschmitt 210 Hornisse (Me-210 Hornet) of World War II? Or perhaps the U.S. Air Force’s expensive all-weather F-89 Scorpion of 1950? Everyone should. They carry important lessons. Each was an advanced technology combat aircraft, and the Bell P-39 was even low cost, relatively speaking. But each was a dismal failure. The P-39 was almost helpless against the Japanese Zero; the Me-210 – produced in considerable numbers – was such a disaster that German pilots refused to fly it, and it was fobbed off onto Germany’s “allies.” The F-89 didn’t even make it into the air combat of the Korean war. That a combat aircraft is “high tech” or even that it is expensive is no guaranty it will be a success in combat.
[In WWII flight sims, I dislike the P-39 also.]

The women had to go through the gruelling three-year training
The Pakistani Air Force (PAF) has inducted four women as fighter pilots for the first time.
] Every now and then, there will always be some kind of a “Wen Ho Lee” conspiracy hatched specifically to put the Chinese on the international spotlight.
Sigh. What else is new?
Back in the 1980s, when the Japanese economy, not the Chinese economy, was the primary threat to the US economy, we had events such as the Toshiba betrayal:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toshiba
“In 1987, the company was accused of illegally selling CNC milling machines used to produce very quiet submarine propellers to the Soviet Union in violation of the CoCom agreement. The incident put a strain on relations between the United States and Japan and resulted in the arrest and prosecution of two senior executives, as well as the imposition of sanctions on the company by both countries.”
What is the location of the Iraqi MiG-23’s?
No idea.
