Final unit of ‘Peace Eye’ early warning aircraft delivered to Air Force
10-24-2012 18:56
A fourth and final unit of the early warning aircraft Peace Eye has been delivered to Korea’s Air Force, the state arms procurement agency said Wednesday.
The delivery marks the completion of a US$1.6 billion project launched in 2006 to buy four modified versions of the high-altitude surveillance aircraft from Boeing to strengthen South Korea’s aerial surveillance capabilities against North Korea.
The first two planes were delivered last year and the third in May.
The last three units were assembled at Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), a local aerospace firm, under Boeing’s supervision.

The fighter jets made the landings at about 2 p.m. Wednesday due to a possible hydraulic system defect involving one of them, according to the U.S. Air Force.
The fighter jets were scheduled to fly to Guam via Okinawa Prefecture, after arriving from the Elmendorf-Richardson base in Alaska.
F-22 fighters flying from the United States usually use Kadena Air Base in Okinawa as a stopover point.

Prosecutors search Defense Ministry over suspected bid rigging scandal
2012/09/05
The alleged bid rigging involves an order for parts for the new multipurpose helicopter UH-X, a successor to the UH-1J, which would be used by the Ground Self-Defense Force (GSDF) for a variety of missions including the transport of goods and personnel, the sources said.
Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. announced in March this year that it had received an order for a UH-X helicopter from the Defense Ministry.
The price of the helicopter is said to be about 1 billion yen per unit.

Conflict of interest on KF-16 deal
09-03-2012 18:22
Col. Baek was responding to an allegation that Brig. Gen. Cho Bo-keun at DAPA may have been connected to the selection of BAE Systems for a $1.1 billion deal to upgrade the nation’s aging KF-16 fighter jets.
His elder brother, retired Rear Adm. Cho Boo-keun has long worked as a senior advisor to BAE.
The company vehemently denied Cho Boo-keun had anything to do with its winning the deal, while DAPA also dismissed any possibility.
