Emergency bomb drop rattles Nellis neighbors
Posted: Feb. 11, 2011 | 2:15 p.m.
The pilot of an A-10 Thunderbolt II attack jet released two 500-pound bombs Friday morning in a safe zone five miles north of Nellis Air Force Base in an emergency procedure after an engine malfunctioned, base officials said.
At least one of the Mark-82 general purpose bombs ** exploded ** and was felt at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, which is near the base.

Seems the USAF didn’t test-fly any MiG-19?
Now that you mention it, ISTR the star-only insignia is mostly on PLA MBTs.
Or, maybe it loses the horizontal bar when it’s on the tail fin?
For comparison, random examples of “without horizontal bar”:

Incidentally, at an aerospace museum or park somewhere in South Korea, is a KF-16 marked “ROKAF 92-000”.

Anyone here knows its real serial number and story?
Maybe it’s an 1:1 model or mock-up?
AFAIK, after the early USAF F-100A crashes, the F-100A supplied to the ROCAF, was upgraded to the improved non-A tail fin.
BTW, last month (December 2010), the NTU students’ “save the Super Sabre” committee popped up in the local (Taiwanese) news because one night, a private car hindered (drove very slow and suddenly braked) an ambulance with its lights flashing and siren wailing. The old patient in the ambulance arrived late at the hospital, and passed away.
The vid from the ambulance cam was posted in the Web, Netters tracked the license plate number of the car, and identified the driver as a member of that committee. The university consequently began to discipline the student.

FYI, for the past couple weeks, I’ve been yomping through Korean blogs and sites, and looking for ROKAF KF-16 pics that aren’t in the F-16.net ROKAF KF-16 photo gallery.

2011/01/31:
WRT the neglected and almost-scrapped retired ROCAF F-100 at the National Taiwan University, reportedly a civilian museum under construction in Georgia, USA, is interested in acquiring, restoring, and displaying it in ROCAF markings.
If the university and the Friends of the Super Sabre (FSS)

reach an agreement, then it will be transported to the USA by late 2011.

Guang Dong AF, PLAAF, based at a coastal AB in southern China.
Two minutes after take off, engine malfunctioned, and smoke in cabin. Pilot shut down one of two engines, and emergency landed, after seven minutes.
Nine crew.
Pilot was ZHANG Cheng Wei.
Co-pilot was WU Yan Le.
Flight engineer was LU Jun Ren.
13:26, took off. Two minutes after take off, was 10 klicks from AB, at 350 m AGL.
Gas leak-like sound, and white smoke with burnt fuel smell filled the cabin, causing the crew’s eyes to weep. Pilot knew cabin pressure was caused by compressing device of engine, and smoke probably caused by engine malfunction.
He decided to close the gas supply switch, open the emergency pressure release switch, told the flight engineer to take a look, and climbed at 8 m/sec.
13:29, at 700 m AGL, left engine rev speed dropped, and lubricant warning light lit up. Flight engineer reported left engine lubricant pressure dropped to 3.5 L/cm^2, the minimum value in the air.
Pilot decided to shut down left engine. If not, abrasion at high temperature could cause engine fire.
Turned around, RTB, and 10.5 klicks from AB, lowered landing gear. Turned left, fought yaw to left, and emergency landed, at 13:35.
