“The herocopter: Chinook notches up fourth Distinguished Flying Cross in its proud 28-year history”
Actually, I agree with the third or fourth comment below that article:
“Why are we using 28 year old aircraft?

“The herocopter: Chinook notches up fourth Distinguished Flying Cross in its proud 28-year history”
Last updated at 11:26 PM on 25th September 2010
When Flight Lieutenant Ian Fortune was awarded the Distinguished *Flying Cross last week, he was rightly honoured for his courage in evacuating six wounded soldiers after a Taliban ambush in Afghanistan.
But if a machine could ever win a medal for bravery, the Chinook helicopter he was flying, Bravo November, would surely qualify.
Ft Lt Fortune is the fourth pilot in the aircraft’s 28-year history to receive the DFC. During the attack, a Taliban bullet smashed the visor of his helmet, knocking him sideways.
To be blunt, Flight of the Intruder was one of the first military aviation novels that I read, after I tried the (then comparatively complex) flight sim based on it, as the novel’s written by a real former A-6 pilot.
Afterwards, when I read military aviation novels, I preferred those written by active or former military personnel, such as Team Yankee, written by a former US Army tank commander; and avoided, say, Larry B_nd and Tom Cl_ncy.
After the FOTI movie came out, I was disappointed the movie writers modified the protagonists’ final mission objective, and the ending.

] If the F-4’s are getting unsafe to fly that’s another story, but I haven’t heard anything of that nature mentioned…at least not yet.
Agreed. I’ve been reading JASDF news for only a couple years (understatement), and I don’t remember too many recent publicised bad news about the F-4, except the occasional emergency landings.
OTOH, the F-2s and F-15s have more bad news, from broken control stick, to TFOAs (including a F-15 engine nozzle), to crashes. For some unknown reasons, F-15s in Japan and USA seem to break off, or break up, more often than F-4s, IMO?
But then, I focus on Jap F-4s, and don’t follow, say, Greek or Iranian F-4s.

“US Navy says electric jet-flinger tech looking good
Just in time to save the Royal Navy – or just too late?”
Posted in Science, 27th September 2010 12:32 GMT
The US Navy’s plan to fit its next aircraft carrier with electromagnetic mass-driver catapults instead of steam launchers is reportedly on track, with shore trials using test weights a success.
The progress of the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS), the first of its kind, is of interest to the Royal Navy as it could offer a way to massively cut the money spent on the Service’s two new carriers – or, more accurately, to cut the money spent on their aeroplanes.
