Excerpt: ‘Strike Group Reagan’ — First Contact
by Harold Hutchison
“FIRST CONTACT
In this excerpt, * pilots from the People’s Liberation Army Air Force serving as “volunteer” supporters for an Islamic uprising in Tunisia engage Italian F-104s *, and are engaged by Lieutenant Renee Patterson and Commander Marissa O’Malley.”
Lieutenant Renee Patterson is a Navy fighter pilot with one of the squadrons assigned to the carrier USS Ronald Reagan.
The Reagan and its battle group, under the command of Rear Admiral Kevin Bradshaw are deployed to the Mediterranean.
Renee’s younger sister Angela is in Tunisia to study archeology, when a civil war breaks out, and American citizens need to be evacuated.
As heavily armed Islamic insurgents, * secretly backed by the Chinese military * make initial gains, the Reagan strike group gets the call.

Rafale.
“French AF”.
About 8 AM, Rafale jet-engine remote-control scale-model crashed into a residential flat, on 28th Floor, Block D, Tian Kuo Community building, Huan He Road, Xin Dian, Taipei County; and caught fire.
Debris damaged a parked BMW.
“Pilot” was XIE An Ping (45), a person in charge of an electronics company, who was arrested, and bailed for NT$ 10K. He had about four years experience with remote-control planes.
He promised to compensate for the damages to the BMW and the flat, and immediately paid NT$ 150K to the BMW owner.
About 300 residents evacuated the building, six of whom inhaled smoke and were taken to hospitals: a guard and five residents.
The flat belongs to LI Zhong Ping, the new head of the Yu Ching police station, Tai Nan County police department.
The model plane, even if second-hand, costs NT$ 210K.
Length: 2.35 m. Width: 1.7 m. Weight: net 17 kg, gross 18 kg.
Jet engine(s): 20-30 cc.
Xie’s a member of the Bai Ma flying club, literally “White Horse flying club”, or officially Unicorn Remote Control Club:
http://unicorn.efly98.com/
The accident plane took off at the Bai Ma airfield, in the Qin Qing He Ping Gong Yuan, literally “Family Love Riverside Park”. With a remote-control radius of about 800 m, it should’ve turned around before the building, but Xie claimed it may have an “instantaneous radio frequency interference”.
When it didn’t come back, and he saw thick smoke in the distance, he called the cops. 8(

About 10:12 AM (not about noon?), after training sortie, or familiarisation flight for tactical intercept course, while landing, after touched down, didn’t brake in time, slid off the runway at the 4,000′ spot, and stopped in the grass.
Aircraft “wasn’t seriously damaged”.
Pilots were OK.
Pilot: Zhuang. Flight commander
Co-pilot: Major General Chen. Deputy director, Integrated Assessment Office (“Zheng Ping Shi” as Chinese Pu Tong Hua abbreviation), ROC MND.
Runway was wet by rain.
http://www.hkcd.com.hk/content/2010-08/30/content_2585751.htm
2010/08/30:
Taiwanese media claim accident report claims: after landing on wet runway, deployed drag chute, but the plane yawed to the right. Pilot released drag chute, tried using brakes and rudder to correct yaw, but ineffective.
The plane glided for about one klick, and went onto the grass.
Repair costs NT$ 800+ mil, excluding engine repair.
Media claims Chen, as a guy-in-back, rides the accident plane to accumulate flight hours for the monthly flight bonus of NT$ 50K-60K.
The plane should’ve diverted to another AB without rain, but this would affect Chen’s schedule.
