“Help recognize a pilot lost in Desert Storm
On the last day of Desert Storm, an A-10 pilot, Captain Patrick Olson, was lost while attempting to land his heavily damaged aircraft at his base in Saudi Arabia.
There is a new bridge in his hometown of Washington, NC and friends of his family have started a petition to have it named after him.
It’s the least we can do to honor a fallen airman.
You can sign the petition at a link through this Blog, and I hope you will – Mike”

303rd Hikoutai, 6th Koukuudan, JASDF, based at Komatsu AB, Ishikawa Prefecture.
At 8:38, in Area G, near Hegurajima, about 165 km north-northeast of Komatsu AB, during ACM training and practising simulated AIM-7 and AIM-9L firings, #846 was hit in its tail by an AIM-9L fired by its wingman, #870 (62-8870).
One pilot of #846 ejected, and rescued by fishing boat. Captain Higuchi Tatsumi.
Aircraft was raised, investigated, and scrapped.
Cockpit section abandoned or preserved at Daikeien Amusement Park, Ichikawa City, Chiba Prefecture.
Control stick can move front and back, not left or right. Throttle stuck at afterburner position.
Wingman, Captian Hino Jun’ya, claimed: missiles were at “safe” condition, but electrical system malfunctioned and fired missile.
Reportedly, real cause was Master Arm Switch was at Arm, not at Safe.
They carried real missiles, not practice missiles, because they took off for training, after their alert duty (ready to scramble and intercept) ended.
Koukuu Fan, 1997 January issue, claimed: under ECM circumstance, pilot concentrated on operating radar, forgot they were live ordnance training, and pressed missile launch button.
