“NORAD gears up for Santa mission”
December 17, 2009 8:34 PM
LANCE BENZEL
THE GAZETTE
This year, about 20 children of military personnel were invited to join commanders from the North American Aerospace Defense Command at Peterson Air Force Base as they briefed Santa on airspace preparations for his global Christmas Eve flight.
The kids squirmed with mouths agape while Air Force Maj. Jim Collins — by day, an F-16 fighter pilot — mulled the details of Santa’s “gift-to-child ratio” and concerns about “chimney facilities.”

15 December 2009:
As the JMOD probably will order a new sub in ’10, Kawasaki and Mitsubishi may compete for it. Based on the defense plan conceived in ’76, the JMSDF would have 16 subs.
From ’77 to ’08, each year the JMOD retired the oldest boat, ordered one new boat, and alternated between the two companies. In ’09, no old boat retired, and no new boat ordered.
From contract to delivery, takes about four years. A dock takes at least one year to complete a new boat.
The JMOD ’10 budget requests 54.4 bil Yen for a new boat.

“Crashed MSDF chopper located on seabed; 1 body found”
Wednesday 09th December, 04:00 PM JST
TOKYO – A Maritime Self-Defense Force vessel Wednesday located an MSDF patrol helicopter that crash-landed the previous day in waters off the city of Nagasaki, leaving two of its three crew members missing.
(The comments under this article are serious, while some Japanese Netters still blame (North Korean) operatives for all their very recent accidents and sabotages, such as the 20-odd JGSDF soldiers who were taken to hospital for poisoning after their instructor told them to taste explosive; or that the unfortunate crew of this unfortunate helo are operatives, so operatives are everywhere.)
1st impression: IMO, might be a 3D model to study the F-22 RCS in a radiation lab, to develop/improve AAMs and air-defense radars.
After all, even the Jap TRDI made a 1:1 mock-up of a domestic ATF, and IIRC shipped it to France for RCS experiments.

2009.12.07:
JASDF announced cause was probably human error. F-15 did not extend landing gear when landing.
Pilot probably forgot to extend landing gear, and extended landing gear after F-15 touched down. He thought he extended landing gear.
JASDF analysed digital flight data recorder. Warning alarm and lamp when landing gear not extended, activated normally for above 30 seconds before landing, but pilot probably did not pay attention to them.
F-15 landed and spinned on almost empty centre drop tank.
Pilot’s total flight time was 3,600 hours. 2,700 hours in F-15.
On ground, another pilot had duty to confirm landing gear extended. He saw landing gear not extended, but did not timely warn pilot by radio.
JASDF ATC also did not remember any warning.
