    Russia is often an incredibly conservative country, of course the lack of technology plays a role also. When you walk through Monino you realize how small most of the Soviet designs were. The Yak-25 is pretty much a minimum-size/volume design for its requirements. And not “integrated”. Radar – Pilots – Tanks – Tail, all serial. Highly swept wing to compensate for the lack of area ruling, two engines Me262 style under the wing. As a bomber interceptor it didn’t have to be a hotrod. And in the later incarnations as bomber, the internal bomb bay was perfect for that one nuclear bomb it was supposed to deliver.

    That is the point: the Yak-28 is a useful engine riveted to the minimum airframe to get it all together. Zero innovation.
    It did its job, but that’s about it.
    A Starfighter could do the same job (delivering a single bomb over a 500nm radius).

    In the late 1950ies Soviet Russia didn’t have any alternatives. The MiG-21 was too small to do the fighter-bomber or interceptor, and the Suchoi 7/9/11 wasn’t really good for it, either. It needed the Suchoi 15 (which was sold as a derivative of the -11 for political reasons) to finally have a real interceptor design. Then came the MiG-25 (an initially very limited design).

    The Yak-28 couldn’t …
    … do any worthwhile conventional mission
    … do any fighter work (the F-105 was at least a bit able)

    It lacked aerodynamic design, any kind of (no high-lift, no area-rule, no advanced wing concepts like delta). The Yak is the best example of how limited Soviet aviation was in the late 50ies, early 60ies.

    Side note: in the same year – 1958 – as the Yak-28 took off for the first time the F-4 made its maiden flight, a design able to do any mission the Yak could ever do, but muuuuuuch better.

    Because all the planes must be fancy and looking good? :rolleyes:, it was a bomber, it had specific requirements, then it became into a fighter.

    In the other side of the world things were not much better

    As bomber it was very good, compared with other planes of it age, like the f-101, and it was even lighter.

    Yes i agree the take of running was not great, but the mig-27 did not improve this dramatically, from 1200m to 900m, with a VG wing and all the added weight, better to improve the Yak design.

    For a bomber it lacked range and low level flying ability.
    Comparing it to a F-105 of the same era shows the difference.
    For conventional bombing the Yak was entirely unsuitable.

    The empty weight figures I found on the Internet are between 9 and 14t, while given the two engines of the 6t MiG-21 indicates a weight in excess of 10t empty.

    If we consider the actual combat use of the AA-10 especialy in conflicts over Afrca used by SU-27 and MiG-29 flown by Soviet merceneary pilots, thean the Aim-7M was a way better missiles, as it achied a 40% hit rate during Desert Storm, a percentage the AA-10 could not even dream off.

    And using semi-active radar homing missiles in a fighter versus fighter combat is a luxury one can rarely afford. The opponent will recognize when he gets locked, and probably wave off. To successfully engage one needs to lock when the other guy cannot escape any more.

    SARH-missiles and the necessary radar equipment were pretty much wasted weight in a European daylight scenario.

    The wording plus the frequent use of bold combined with the general lack of proper spelling indicates that quoted user is our old friend MiG-23MLD, which makes any direct answer pointless.

    The yak-28, i still don’t understand why it was replaced, why it design was abandoned for the mig-27, su-17, and then.. the Su-25?

    The yak-28 had everything the 27 and 17 had, and with the mig-21 engines , idea that was used for the su-25, the yak was supersonic, twin engined multirole airframe, is the only aircraft i would call ‘supersonic canberra’ (please if there is other similar plane let me know)

    Would like to learn more about it operative history, i have not found pictures from it inside, if somebody have them , please post them here 🙂

    Probably because it was the worst supersonic aircraft ever conceived.

    It was essentially a conventional aircraft with enough installed thrust to jump over the sound barrier. The slow top speed and high weight speak for itself. The fact that the USSR didn’t have anything better till mid/end 1960ies shows the dramatic technology gap in the early Cold War days.

    Your idea to do the job of the MiG-27 or Suchoi 17 with a Firebar shows your lack of thorough thinking: both aircraft were required to operate from short fields, and the Yak-28 was probably the runway-hungriest aircraft of its era.

    I think Su-34 + KS-172 could be a splendid AWAC killer.

    Only one issue: how does the launch platform know where the AWACS is?
    Maybe they walk to their toilet (which the might Suchoi has), turn on their iPad, lock into the local on-board WLAN (another feature of the Suchoi) and check http://www.flightradar24.com .

    Apart from that, if I launch my non-existing Wunder-Missile from a Suchoi 34 or an F-4 Phantom is rather secondary. Both could carry it, it weights less than a ton.

    Aircraft like the Su-30 and MiG-31 that acted as AWACs show that pilots did have a degree of freedom from ground control and pilots of Mirage IIIs and F-104 would have had the same dependance on ground control as a MiG-21.

    Suchoi 30 wasn’t even operational before the Soviet Union became defunct. The MiG-31 was a pure interceptor for the huge territories up north, nothing you send in to support tactical fighters.
    F-104 was never intended as fighter, at least not in German service.

    The Soviet lacked training and and their aircraft didn’t allow many variations in tactics. I think the described “furball” looks a bit desperate. Since early 80ies the NATO fighters were equipped with all-aspect IR-AAM, which really changed the WVR fight.

    AIMVAL/ACEVAL had shown that exchange ratio evened out when numbers grew. That test was without BVR-missiles and without all-aspect IR-AAM. The AIM-7 was never really a useful weapon for fighter-to-fighter combat, and the Russian counterparts mounted on MiG-23 and MiG-29 were even less useful.
    However, an F-15A with 4 AIM-9L would mean a very difficult opponent, and a good fighter pilot would rather expend his 4 missiles in quick succession before becoming engaged in a potentially deadly dogfight. That would require a lot of MiG-21 and -23 to eat up the Sidewinder reserves.

    By the way: the Eastern German / Russian air force had a tactic to defeat a NATO AWACS patrolling over Western Germany. It included an entire group of MiG-21MF and loss of the entire group without achieving the objective was considered “likely”.

    Yes agreed, the F-15E could very well hold its own.
    The F-15E is a great striker, which history shows.
    But against units like Su-35S it would not hold its own.

    I don’t think high assets like the Su-34 are left alone without escort regarding any mission where it could face F-15/16 etc etc.

    If one need a stand-off bomber or something closer to CAS, the Su-34 wins hand down any given day.

    The Suchoi 34 is heavier and has probably better payload-range. That’s it. For most missions these capabilities are not asked for. Going unescorted into a heavily defended airspace would mean a difficult mission for both aircraft, which they cannot fight successfully without support.
    Both are today “second wave” aircraft, going in after stealthy aircraft, UAVs or cruise missiles have degraded the air defense.

    While not necessarily concerned with global missions, doesn’t Australia need a longer range capability with its F-111s retiring? And aren’t they not completely satisfied with the capabilities of the F/A-18 and F-35?

    I doubt an F-111 can beat a Super Hornet in combat mission range by a substantial margin. Is the F-111 is larger, but has some nasty limitations thanks to its original requirement to drop The Bomb.

    Wouldn´t this airframe be a perfect platform for a new Wild Weasel type, hence the available space within the airframe and the performance datas??

    EF-18G is the new “Wild Weasel”. A true “Wild Weasel” would today be a perfect job for a remote controlled UAV. Flying low & fast can still be a useful addition to any WW-aircraft, both types do not really master this task.

    I would pick an F-15E over an Suchoi 34. The mission normalley requires to carry 2 heavy devices over a distance. The F-15E can do that very good. The Suchoi offers additional capability and may be of advantage for larger payloads.
    What really makes the F-15E attractive: take away the CFTs, the targeting pods and the heavy fuselage pylons and you have a fully capable air defence fighter.

    Which one is more suitable for the air to ground role??
    I think the SU is more suitable for global missions, which include multiple air refuellings, and hence the comfort on board ( pressurized cabin, toilet, seats that can be reclined to a flat bed ) and the roughness, for which russians aircraft are known, it might be a competitor for upcoming F 15 sale campaigns….
    DOes anyone know anything about the avionics in this aircraft??
    And a MTOW exceeding 44 tons….wow……

    The Suchoi 34 doesn’t have a toilet. That’s an urban myth.

    The Suchoi 34 is the better bomber, the F-15E the better multi-mission aircraft.

    – usefullness: most crashes don’t happen with a 30 seconds prior notice.

    In most cases the ejection would either be too late or unnecessary, causing huge number of fatalities. 1-5% of all ejections are not successful (pilot dead), makes one granted kill per 100 people.

    I suggest that you take a reading comprehension class. I never said you said throttle % is commonly used. But contrary to what you keep saying 0% throttle is idle & 100% throttle is max dry/military power even for the Tornado.

    Actually, I never saw “0% throttle” anywhere. In aircraft manuals the power settings are directly named or the engine’s power is given (as N1, EPR, RPM). In flight mechanics the thrust (not throttle) is given, from 0% to 100%.

    A afterburning TF/TJ would have N1 from IDLE (~betwenn 35 and 70% N1_max) to MIL (100-105% N1_max), then (as you say) Min A/B … to Max A/B.

    “deg Throttle” is probably used as the throttle senses the angle and sends it to the FADEC or EEC (in case of Tornado). Therefore, “deg Throttle” might be used in some publications, but surely not in publications aimed at pilots.

    Yes for ALL jet/turbine engines! As already posted % throttle is not very commonly used but when it is, 0% throttle is idle & 100% throttle is max dry/military with afterburner ‘throttle/power’ given as AB1, AB2, AB3…

    Assuming a linear corrilation between throttle & RPM…

    But the important fact is that 0% throttle is idle power, not zero power (aka engine off) & 100% throttle is max dry/military power, not max afterburner power.

    pfcem is right here. There is the flight mechnaic perspective, where throttle and thrust are linearly connected and 0% (or degrees, or whatever) give no thrust to the aircraft (but still compensate for the engines drag, which is substantial).

    Today a nice guy named FADEC senses the throttle position, and depending on Mach number, altitude and temperature translates this into an N2/N1 or EPR. Engineers try to make the thrust proportional to throttle position, although thrust is not linear connected to N1. EPR is rather linear connected to thrust, therefore traditionally used by some manufacturers (P&W).

    Between IDLE N1 and 100% N1, one can roughly say:
    N1 ~ THR^2

    ~ means proportional

    40% throttle setting, not power. The question is how the throttle settings are defined in the F-35. Pcfem suggests 0% is idle and 100% max dry. If we assume that idle is 65% (quite common for military turbofans) than 40% throttle setting would equal 79% RPM. I’m not sure whether that is really realistic, my feeling says no, but who knows. A prove for the claim besides pcfem would be nice, but my request remained unanswered.

    Normally you define 0% as throttle at FLIGHT IDLE, and 100% for throttle at military thrust. That is the pilot’s view.
    Generally you are right: FLIGHT IDLE is between 35% and 70% N1 depending on altitude and speed. The N1 again is changing, that is why it is usually given as percentage of Max N1.
    At 40k altitude a modern fighter would fly at a reltaviley low throttle setting fpr a M0.85 cruise, probably 50%, resulting in ~80-90% N1.

    By the way: this moderate throttle setting has a negative impact on SFC. The ability to go supersonic in dry thrust costs subsonic cruise efficiency.

    If the USAF and LM specified a supercruise requirement into the F-35, they are pretty stupid. For the few times supersonic speeds are required in the F-35’s mission profile, the A/B will do.

    Blackbird: for the time it had fuel. The A12/SR71 didn’t use a traditional afterburner concept, the engine layout cannot be compared to today’s engines. The price to pay was a jaw-dropping subsonic SFC.

    Foxbat: afterburner probably as long as it has gas, which wasn’t for long usually.

    Concorde: the Concorde didn’t use its afterburner for cruise flight. So it could do Paris-NY. The Tu-144 required reheat, and it couldn’t fly a useful mission.
