Abingdon on Sunday
I attended the Abingdon Fayre yestersday and was delighted to see Auster J/5P Autocar, G-AOFM. turn up, which I haven’t seen for more than 20 years. Last time I saw it, it was painted cream and red, so don’t know where it has been since.
I have one of the Airfix Auster Antarctic kits that I bought when they recently re-released it (stll in the “to build” pile though). I don’t know how accurate the box art is.
My first flight was in an Auster in the 70’s at Skegness. G-APKN – does anyone know the status of this Auster – I seem to recall it was damaged a while back.
The only thing wrong with the Airfix boxart is the overall colour, which should be ORANGE and not yellow! This error was perpetauted when the real WE600 was repainted yellow in the ’60s and appeared at Abingdon in 1968 for the 50th Anniversary of the RAF celebrations in this colour. Thankfully, they realised their error and it is now at Cosford correctlt reapinted orange.
Dc3,Rapide twice and Twin Pioneer .Oh and a BMA viscount to jersey!
Alan.
Sorry, the Viscount doesn’t count, unless it is now preserved in a museum?
Presume the Twin Pin is G-APRS as per your Avateur?
If anyone’s interested I can confirm that she’s in Marshalls for a repaint.
I think it HAS to be, as I didn’t know there were any left still in the old ‘hemp’ scheme. Last time I went to Brize every one I saw was in the new grey scheme.
and maybe Abingdon on Sunday
Melv
Oh YES please Melv – bring it in to Abingdon on Sunday 😀
Just tooooo many eggbeaters at Abingdon for me, and the interesting classic jets are listed as ‘Static’ only, so I’ll be off to OW!
You must be yolking! 😉 how can THREE be too many?
Thanks very much for the corrections and additional info on the Skegness Austers.
I think the Auster is a much under-rated type and with so many variants, I just wish someone would publish a full history with Production List. There have been several half-hearted attempts, but nothing that is worthy of this historically-important type, which stemmed from the Taylorcraft designs. I have been pestering Air-Britain and a well-known Auster historian for this, but nothing emerges! Anyone know where there is a production list?
I’ve never heard of these and would love to get hold of one. G-ARUG was the “sister” aircraft to G-ASFK (the first Auster I ever saw at North Denes in the 60s) and they were two of the last (if not THE last) J/5Gs built (originally unsold exported J/5B airframes returned to Rearsby in 62/63). Always been an ambition of mine to build a model of ‘FK, but never found a model to do it…
This kit is a beauty and pretty rare now! One went on e.bay a few weeks ago for around £40. The only omission is a lack of interior, so I had to build a full seat-fit and carpets for both of them, as you can view all this through the transparent canopy. Also both of the actual machines modelled should have spats on their wheels, but I have no way of reproducing these. I was quite surprised when G-AOIY turned up at G-VFWE at Abingdon last year, re-engined with a Lycoming!!
Hello,
Sorry, no floats or skis.!!….but attached anyway..I hope..are 3 photo’s of the good old Auster days at Skegness Aerodrome.
My first flight was in a Skeggy Butlin Bomber too.!!
Does anyone know the status of G-AHSO, G-AJEI and G-AHCK these days.??
I note that G-AJEI has had a very recent change of ownership.
All the best,
Clive.
All three still survive, ‘HSO and ‘JEI both registered to a W.Miller, so may both still be resident at Skeggy. G-AHCK is now flying as G-OJVC (I hate vintage aircraft being given special reggies)
Is there not a MORE appropriate place on this forum for all these nice miltary aircraft that seem to have strayed into Commercial Aviation???
You have to be flexible with your interests! This relates to Doncaster(Robin Hood) Airport, but suppose you would object to it still being called ‘Finningley’. 🙁
We are discussing activitities ‘at this location’ before it became a civil airport.
Perhaps you should suggest a trade of threads with this on the Military Aviation Forum:
