Anyone got any pics of that famous 15 ship formation at Kemble in 2001?

    You mean this one?

The difference between Old Warden and Abingdon is that although the former has lots of unique machines, the show is predictable and you know you’re going to see the same planes over and over again! Abingdon on the other hand is an unknown quanitity and the chance to see something different and a good variety of machines too.No contest for me, I can go to the next Shuttleworth display but Abingdon is only once a year!

How old is Ray these days, anyway? Mid-70s?

Ray is 76 this year. Every time I see him he seems as fit as ever, but you can’t go on for ever!

About 25-30 years ago, I managed to find one of the old and rare 1/48th scale Lincoln Auster Autocar kits and built it as G-AOIY in 1977, which used to live on a strip at Sutton Bridge, Lincs., near to where I was in the RAF. Then I found another of these kits issued by Kadar in Hong Kong and built this fairly recently as G-ARUG that currently lives at Biggin Hill. Here they are.

    Ow! That’s horrible!

If you’d like a decent Auster kit, there’s a 1/48 scale kit of an Auster III by Sword. I supplied some of the references for the patternmakers, and backing up some of the comments above, sales were disapointing, hence no further kits have been released to date.

    Details: http://modelingmadness.com/scotts/allies/gb/austerpreview.htm

Hallam Vac did an Auster AOP9 vacform 1/72 whichyou can get if you hunt around.

James – I have this Sword kit to do and I’m waiting…and waiting… for their 1/72nd version, but it never seems to arrive!

Have known Ray Hanna for nearly 40 years and have never known such a professional display pilot ever! He has always been extremely skilled at low-level and formation flying, but I don’t know how much longer he can go on doing this. At some point, he will want to reduce this activity towards retirement and this could be the start of it.

Billiard tables? Considering there is a slight nose up attitude during cruise, how are they going to make this work? Will the legs on the back of the table be longer in order to compensate?

Of course not! The billiard table will work on a gyro system, where it auto-stabalises!!

Talking about the Airfix Auster kit, I think someone should be ‘Austerasized’ for building this!!

Still deciding on Abingdon or Old Warden same day. Hmm…

You can ‘do’ Old Warden several times a year but Abingdon is a ‘one-off’ annual event for charity and well worth attending.

A leak, our paint scheme security has been breached!

Kev.. how on earth did you find out about the secret back-up plan (just in case there was not enough blue paint and masking tape for the Transport Command scheme)?

    I was rather keen on this version 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀

Ah, now I know why we are called ‘plane spotters’ 😀 😀 😀

Nice pics mate, thanks for putting them up. I’d always thought the Lib was kept in Indian AF markings, when did she get the SEAC roundals??

When was the last time you visited Cosford? It was repainted in these markings fairly soon after it arrived in the late ’70s!!

Albert, if it is any consolation the bare metal engine cowlings are apparently in line for a serious polishing. 🙂

Lovely!! Just another 60% of the airframe to go! 😉

    Albert.

Would it be churlish of me to point out the fact that should you offer to pay for the work required to create the level of authenticity you personally aspire to, that the operators might in fact, bite off your hand, as it were?

I think the aircraft looks superb, after all, it’s not as if it’s been painted pink with yellow polka dots.

    Regards,

    kev35

That just doesn’t make sense!! Removing the paint to reveal a natural metal finish must be far cheaper than paying for the whole thing to be sprayed polyurythene grey! Likewise spraying it lacquered silver can be no more expensive than spraying it grey!! Where is the cost differential?

I think the only known preserved aircraft are at War Museum at the Citadel in the centre of Cairo.
There are a PZL Wilga, Zlin Tener Master, MiG 15 and MiG 21 preserved there. Maybe you’ll find some information there?
