Not great…went to NO airshows (wish Colorado would get it in gear and get some going in Denver again) 1 fly-in, which was enjoyable, saw the Collings bombers on their stop through, and DID just have an air to air session with a Mustang and two T-6’s this last weekend…but other than that aviation wise it was a bust…
Now on OTHER fronts it was a GREAT summer…

Where were you during the wonderful seaplane ‘splash-in’ at Boulder City?
Both G-ABUS and G-ACTF are both airworthy, the latter at Old Warden. I saw it there earlier this month. G-ABTC is currently stored at Biggin Hill, I think, and I believe G-ABUU was recently sold to Spain in airworthy condition.
I was there in 1997 and shot the entire collection. Good job I did as it is indeed now closed due to lack of funds. I understand that those types not already in the Monino collection will go there, but the rest will be scrapped.
Nigel,
A couple of images from my Greenham archives
Ah, that’ll be 1976!
john romain possibly
No, not short enough!
Very nice! Doesn’t Sally B look rough underneath!
Most women of that age look rough underneath!! 😉 :diablo:
First air shows
First one was Farnborough 1958 – 22 Black Arrows Hunters looping, waves of Hunters, Javelins, all three V-bombers painted white, Fairey Rotodyne, Westland ‘circus’ of about 7-8 different types, Sea Hawk and Scimitar aerobatic teams etc. Then came Battle of Britain or ‘RAF At Home’ days at Abingdon and Colerne, Royal Observers Corps air days and the RAF 50th Anniversary of Military Aviation display at Upavon in 1962. These were all ‘serious’ air shows with a huge input by the services, often including a 38 Group airfield attack with Hunters of 1 & 54 Squadrons beating up the airfield, Twin Pioneer doing a recce, Beverleys dropping parachutists and landing to deploy tanks, Whirlwinds and Belvederes with underslug guns and LandRovers and lots of troops and pyrotechniques everywhere! What does the MoD show the ‘tax-payer’ these days at air shows….not a lot!!
I second that – RAE Bedford around 1968.
I am very surprised no one has commented, or even apparently noticed, that some of the Commando Sea Kings have FLOATS!!! These are possibly converted HAS.5/6s and wonder if anyone knows the serials?
Whats the point in a dare thats already taken place…?

Oh, thanks, I missed that!! Wonderful stuff and what a nice way to deviate between aviation…..and now on to the buses? :diablo:
The pics are great…the SOUND must have been incredible!
A female aviation photographer – VERY welcome!
Someone once asked me why I’m so interested in “things to do with the war” (specifically aeroplanes), and I just said “They’re so beautiful”.
My girlfriend is finally beginning to understand why I like Spitfires so much, after watching the tailchase at Flying Legends this year! 🙂
When you look at a Blenheim or Beaufighter, just be sure your girlfiend understands your clarification of ‘beauty’ and don’t mention ‘Big Bristols’!!
I don’t, I just go on about it and they are forced to hear. I am lucky in that I have some mates who are a bit interested and come along to an airshow or two. I often just say that I’m involved with some veterans from a wartime fighter squadron. When pushed (!) I will say more, and it goes on from there. But why explain it? It’s just an normal healthy obsession like everyone has.
A side note – my Missus had no interest in seeing the steqam train that came through here last week. I just fancied seeing and getting some snaps of it. We both had a thoroughly enjoyable time waiting in the rain and seeing it, as did my little girl. Dunno why, poerhaps it’s a change from routine that evokes a particular feeling? Hell, the sound of a Spit miles away, completely out of context (ie not when expected as at a show), is such a wonderful thing.
I dare you to post a photo of that steam train? :diablo: You would be surprised how many of us deviate down that road, not to mention buses, trams etc!
Albert,
thank you for sharing that rare photo!
Do you mean you actually shot it or was it purchased ‘second-hand’?
Bye
Fabio
No, I didn’t take it myself (I would have been only 8!). It was given to me by a local friend who gave up collecting slides.
