Oooops read the wrong line on my movement card ! , XS186 joined the RAF at Manby in 1964 , and left for good in 1968 , before Lauriebe got there !
AR – I,m not sure how standard the serial was under the wings of JP’s ,on the original paintwork on the underside of XS186’s wings ,there is’nt any serial ?
Think you’ll find ALL JPs had underwing serials when in RAF service. Possibly the one Robbo shot at OW had been repainted and the owner couldn’t be bothered with it.
Don’t worry AR ! , XS186’s colour scheme will be it’s original and unusual light aircraft grey with orange dayglo bands and CAW insignia, which will match the one and only picture I have managed to locate of the aircraft, whilst in service with the College of Air Warfare at Manby in 1968 (as you noted).
Nice pic Robbo ! Keep em coming guys!
I,ve often wondered what the range and scope of CAW operations was , as it seemed to cover everything from basic refresher, to highly complex navigation / radar/ armaments training, as far as i can tell , on a very ad hoc, old school RAF kind of way !
Anyone got any experience/ knowledge in the CAW area ?
Oh well done that man! However, I must say I never saw a CAW JP in GREY and dayglo, only SILVER/dayglo in 1967 then in the “Macaws” grey and red scheme in 1968 and finally in red/white/grey in 1969. Any chance of you posting that photo of XS186 for us all to enjoy, as I don’t have one of it?
Yes, one or two, I’ll scan them sometime and try and post them.
Think I’ve got copies of your slides Steve!
As a few people probably know, I’m more of a rag and string type, but this JP’s display at Old Warden had me transfixed. Lovely plane and very nice display routine:
Interesting? An unidentifable JP with no serials beneath the wings 🙁
Flying with the Red Arrows, going over the top of a loop with smoke from the rest of the team going past the canopy -18th May 1988!
Oy….totally missed the post on Colorado/Midland….all i can say is Midland, TX is totally acceptable….as long as there are Warbirds there. Otherwise….you might as well be standing in the midst of the biggest, flatest, most desolate, uninhabited area on the planet. There is nothing there…and from Colorado, it is a 16 hour drive to the show (an overnighter for us…Literally) for the CAF show in october….one which, god willing and the creek don’t rise, I will be driving to for the first time in about 4 or 5 years this october. As for Colorado…well, y’all gots to come out here to see for yourself what THIS place is all about…Beautiful mountains 14,000 ft high, great skiing, 80 and 90 degree days, 300 days a year of sunshine, dry heat with NO humidity (the best kind)…a great place to live and GOOD fishinmg…trout of all kinds. Texans love it….it TOTALLY does’nt look like Midland!

Oh, okay, but I only mentioned Midland as the CAF is based there. I know many preferred Harlingen, but ANYWHERE that has good weather right now would be better than Duxford for flying warbirds! We’re currently have the worst weather ever and today was announced as the coldest July day on record! 😮
The cosmetic work is already well in hand , and she should be repainted early next year in a fairly unique (and original ) scheme , watch this space!
..oh no, not another grey one with multi-coloured spots PLEASE!! 😮
It should be nicely sprayed silver and dayglo and correct unit markings.
Was this one once with the College of Air Warfare at Manby?
Any suped-up Lockheed Jetstars modded with winglets?l
Perhaps those that can’t make it won’t feel so bad, when we all get soaked to the skin at Duxford with this disasterous weather we are having and wishing Legends migrated to Midland, Texas!!
The Dutch Connie in formation with the Swiss Super Connie!
I think you got the point!!
I know. I’m 100. That’s intentional. Same age as powered flight.
Crikey, you must be bathing in ‘Oil of Olay’ every night, as you looked a hell of a lot younger than that, when I met you at Abingdon earlier this year?? 😉
Saturday or Sunday depends on weather forecast Friday evening! Not looking too good so far. Suggest 11.00am by Vulcan nose on both days?
Correct.
Sea Hawk should return sometime in August if all goes to plan.
It was due to go to Kemble on 20th June, but didn’t make it. Any chance of it going there for their 12th September show?
Gladiator markings
C’mon Willow,
Good start, but that’s a bit short! It was only G-AMRK since going on the civil reg (circa 1960?) and a reg it only wore back in its earliest civil days. However it DID also wear K8032 as L8032 was regarded as a bit ‘late’ for a silver pre-war scheme, so they just changed the first letter of the serial ;). L8032 was the ‘correct’ serial for most of the airframe, but of course lage chunks came from other a/c.As regards TD248 – Fuselage panels don’t retain the ID – the dataplate does that (this is a one sentance summary of an multi-page multi-thread argument. But it’s good enough a summary for me!)
Cheers / Salut
James,
After getting Shuttleworth to repaint their Tutor, I have now been lobbying them to put the Gladiator back in to a RAF scheme, suggesting 73 Squadron with blue/yellow diamond wing markings. I think they’ve had their fair whack of
‘free repaint’ by a Norwegian film crew and our sole airworthy Gladiator should be displayed in RAF markings!
