Laugh?, I nearly bought my own beer!! Funny, NOT!
I really thought the HLF £2.5m would have done it, then it was a case of oodles of gallons of Crown Solo Brilliant Gloss White paint and away she goes! Another £573,000 needed??? How on each did they reach that sum and how on earth did they convince HLF that they could raise this amount if they are still just appealing for further donations? Seems like a bottomless pit to me and that this goal will never be reached, as they’ll always be a need for more and more money…and that’s before it gets to the end of the runway, let alone when it really starts burning fuel?
i have seen great reports on http://www.cruiseserver.net

Itinerary: MediterraneanOH MY GOD if you don’t try the Sunbird then you’v never really experienced cruising!! Who needs the QE2 when the Sunbird is fun, relaxing & an absolute experience!!
Everywhere was well maintained & sitting areas were all very comfortable & pleesant! As I am not a gambler I did not use the Casino but those who enjoy a slot or two would not be disappointed. During my stay on the Sunbird I spent many nights walking around the ships decks where it was peacfull & calming again tidy & clean!
The food was of an excellent standard as I always looked forward to going to the Seven Seas restaurant for my dinner. The service was outstanding as the waiters & head waiters were more than welcoming & very helpful, always stopping for chats about your day on land & giving handy tips for the nest port of call! The food & service was huge highlight of my holiday!
Cabins are not huge but you do not feel crampt. Sharing with my friend we both had plenty wardrope space & found the beds to very very comfortable indeed! Our tv in our cabin was great as it had many channels to choose from & a good selection of movies to watch if relaxing in your cabin after a busy night on the ship. Yes you could hear the noise of the ship but there was no need for ear plugs & after all it is part of the cruising experience!
The entertainment was good quality, especially when we had a super comedian on for a few nights. The cruise staff were always helpful & there was always great shows on to go to after your eveing meal. Special shows were also held with crew members taking to the stage to show there talents which was a pleasure to watch.
There were always plenty of activities happening onboard the Sunbird from linedancing to games on the sports deck & many more. Plenty to do for the kids onboard & fun activities to watch such as ice-craving & towel folding (which sounds silly but actually really quite amazing the end results!) If you didnt want to stay onboard then the itineraries were all good value for money with a good selection of places to visit at each port of call! Also if the tours were not to yur taste then at many ports you have the freedom to do your own site-seeing!
Our fellow passenger were all in the holiday mood & everyone was very pleasamt creating a fabulous atmosphere onboard. We did meet many lovely couples but since we are both 18 we would have rather taken the waiters home for dinner!! I have been on the Sunbird twice & would go on many more times as its very special & just a great experience.
and the pic of the ship
What has all this got to do with ‘Commercial Aviation’??? Surely you are on the wrong website, let alone the wrong thread?
Ken – I got this off the HISTORIC AVIATION thread! This is NOT Modern Military Aviation!! We are going round in circles!
I would say that was definitely it!! Excellent photo and thanks very much for posting it. I heard the rumble of the engines while chasing the cat into the garden to give it its flea treatment…all thoughts of that forgotten as I searched the skies, but it was above the cloud base until already some way off!
Thanks again.
Guess my photo comes up to scratch then???? 😉
Here’s a good shot of G-HUNT whilst with Spencer Flack, taken at Alconbury 16 August 1980 – enjoy! 🙂
A lost duo
No problem and here’s another shot posted in memory of two lost friends, also taken at White Waltham Air Show 14th May 1977.
Is that your pic Albert? Nice.
Thanks James, yes, shot it from Cessna 404 G-EXEX out of Coventry three years ago.
Does this clarify things? Seems your description was spot-on! 😎
An excellent book covering this era is “On Silver Wings” by Alec Lumsden and Owen Thetford, published by Osprey Publishing. It covers RAF bi-planes between the wars and should be just what you’re looking for.
Location is definately HUCKNALL and the date was 3rd June 1963. I have the “Red Pelicans” brochure from that year, which gives their display dates.
Isn’t she just gorgeous – everything just perfect! What a tribute to such dedication and hard work.
I’ll be there whichever day Michael Fish says the sun will shine!!
Ah the lovely TF956 😮
I wonder if that was Peter Shepperd at the helm during those displays?
He’s widely regarded as one of the best Sea Fury pilots by all those that saw his flights.
Yes, it was indeed Pete Sheppard, who I got to know quite well in the ’70s and it was him that got me a flight in the Swordfish – great guy!
In memory of TF956
Thought I would balance the RNHF Sea Fury photos out by posting these in memory of the late TF956 that I took during its heyday. The landing shot is at Duxford 29/6/75 and the banking shot at White Waltham 14/5/77 in front of Prince Charles.
