    The single seat closed cocpit stampe (V18) is airworthy with the stampe museum as OO-GWD. I saw it in the air 2 years ago. This is a original member of the duo. A other example which sometimes flew with the duo is a black painted SV4 twoseater (V64) and is on static show mostly at the Brussels air museum. I don’t know what happend with V28. I don’t think V28 has survived.

    The two pics on top here I found on the net, the one at the bottom I took at Antwerp two years ago (sorry for the poor quality of the pic).

    V28 is still listed as being with the Belgian AIr Force Museum in Brussels, so perhaps it is stored there and not on display?

    I was also on this sortie with JDK. We shot these pics on 29th July 1992,from the open ramp door of an RAF Hercules. I also flew back to Boscombe in XS235. What a brilliant sortie that was and you can see my photos and read all about it in the October 1992 issue of Aircraft Illustrated.

    Les Manchots

    Does anyone remember the Belgian Air Force display duo, “Les Manchots”(Penguins) that displayed their Stampe SV-4s at Biggin Hill and other shows during the ’60s? They used both single and two seat Stampes with enclosed cockpits.

    Shame about the tent blowing into the Stampes. Does that mean that stamp collectors shouldn’t be intense (boom, boom)????

    Sorry about the no engine run, but the museum didn’t bother to sort out fire cover for us. If we get fire cover for next week we will try to do an engine run, or if we get permission from the new landowners we may do a taxi instead, or both.

    ….ah, so the aircraft can taxi without running the engines…hmm interesting?
    Perhaps it’s hauled up the old race-track ramp and allowed to ‘free-wheel’ down? 😎

    The only surviving Antoinette in Europe appears to be the one hanging in the Science Museum in London. As ‘Black Knight’ says,cranes were used to simulate some of the ‘flying sequences’ so some of the types didn’t actually fly at all. Of course, that was pretty obvious with the types that Tony Hancock and Eric Sykes were ‘flying’.
    However, the Antoinette does appear to really fly, so perhaps Alan Wheeler’s book will reveal all?

    Vanguard cockpit mock-ups are not the same as the real thing and this is how I like to remember Vanguards, when my father took me to Heathrow once or twice each year during the 1960s…..ahhh, those droning Tynes! 😎

    Albert, could you provide Corgi with the correct information on setting out the USAAF ‘Stars and Bars’ please (at least with reference to BBD)?

    I have just compared photos of the real thing to the Corgi 1/32nd model and can’t see too much wrong. Perhaps the fuselage ‘stars and bars’ should be fractionally smaller, but that’s all.

    That’s okay, I’m not embarrassed to say I’ve never heard of him either! A little explanation might have helped as we can’t be expected to know everyone!

    went today to have a look. engine runs cancelled due to lack of fire cover, they will try again next Saturday. For a sunny Saturday, I was dissappointed at how few people were there today. I do hope that Concorde brings in more punters.

    Thanks, you’ve made me feel better, as I mourned the fact that I couldn’t get to Brooklands today. As the engine runs were cancelled today, does that mean they will try engine runs ONLY next Saturday without any taxying as well?

    Yes, the Mitchell still survives and is currently at North Weald with Aces High named “Bedsheet Bomber” It was N9089Z and I think they shortened it to N908 in the film to look like a military serial. It is really ex 4430861 and after the film was due to return to the USA, but became unservicable and never did return.

    I think there were at least two of each built in some cases, the second ones being non-fliers, which have subsequently been scrapped in most cases, I think. For example another Avro Triplane was built for Terry Thomas to have the wings chopped off on top of a train. Yes, the Shuttleworth Blackburn monoplane does appear in this, albeit on the ground. The second Bristol Boxkite is in the Bristol City Museum.

    Thanks Nick. That is indeed a great help….the spine still looks slightly darker than the red on the wings. I rest my case!
