That’s very interesting Roger, never knew that. Even more reason to find info on this elusive museum!
Never heard of it. Is it known if they have an Avenger there?
BW Roger
Considering the Brazilian Navy never operated Avengers, I very much doubt it!
Hi.
I don’t think the Fairey Rotodyne was at the 1961 Show, It’s not in the
book i have on Farnborough.
Phil.
It most certainly was there in 1961. It didn’t land but flew in daily from White Waltham, then returned and in RAF markings. Unfortunately, it did not appear on the public days, but here it is during the week.
Yes! Great news (at least for me) that Corgi is bringing out three Halifaxes in april 2007. One of these will be W1048, a Mk III and a Mk II Special with Tollerton fairing.
I had heard that Corgi had measured W1048 at Hendon but if I look at the pic of the model it looks like a metal version of the Matchbox plastic kit with the very skinny nose, which looks a bit off.
Most Corgi kits look like metal versions of plastic kits.Wat say you?
Cees
Most kits look like plastic versions of Corgi models!! :diablo: The reason the pics of the forthcoming Corgi Halifaxes look like plastic kits is because they ARE plastic kits. Corgi had to use Airfix and Matchbox kits just to illustrate their new models, as the toolings haven’t been made yet!
Why not start a new thread instead of raking up an old one? You could always include a reference to the old one, after all.
What would be the advantage of that Peter?
Thanks David for clarifying the end of the A@AEE Argosy. Always had a soft spot for the type, they seemed to turn up everywhere for year after year with the RAF,RAE,A@EE and civilian users then all of a sudden they are all gone.
I like this image which should have gone in the Dayglow thread perhaps.
Yes, right! Don’t think you can get much rarer that a Zaire-registered Argosy!!
I would guess this is landing at East Midlands after an ar test sometime in 1977.
It’s almost a year since this thread was added to, so thought I would revive it by making another appeal for any more photos of the Fairey Rotodyne, especially anything taken at Farnborough in 1961 showing it in RAF markings?
I think these are from Cranwell, The Poachers, not the Macaws.
Nice photos though.
Yes indeed, these are the “Cranwell Poachers” with stylised ‘CP’ in smoke on their tails during 1970.
Quite, and trust me as a taxpayer too, you all got full value from this particular aircraft.
…and what about future generations? Have you thought there is not ONE single 748 preserved in this country, let alone the oldest survivor? 🙁
Fair comment, I sick of my taxes being squandered, give it to me if they like, I’ll break it up and sell it for scrap to get some of my money back.
mick
I thought only aviation enthusiasts frequented this forum not sadists!! 😮
We are talking about the oldest surviving 748 here my boy!!!
The following (list probably incomplete) all wore that particular Macaws scheme (JP Mk.4s)
XP558
XP672
XP680
XR667
XR701
XS177
XS180
XS219
Mark – these also appeared in Macaws markings during 1969-72 :
XR654
XR660
XS210
XS211
XS215,
XS216
although I guess all were not painted up throughout the four-year period!
Peter,
You’re quite correct about the markings on that Stampe, although this wasn’t the original one, but G-AZSA painted up to represent the only Stampe to wear RAF colours. The last two were taken at Colerne on 4th July 1970. I always thought the Camel replica looked very dubious in stature and with a battered cowling, that I didn’t bother to photograph it on that day. 😮
As we have some ‘quality viewers’, here are another four:
1) WJ911 of 115 Sqn. RAF Signals Command at Lyneham 12th July 1968.
2) WL673 of 6 FTS in white/grey/dayglo scheme touching down at Colerne 4th July 1970.
3) WL688 of 5 FTS in red/white/grey scheme taking off from Lyneham 21 April 1972.
4) Finally – my favourite shot of the RAE’s radar-nosed WF379 at Abingdon on 15th September 1978 lit by a small shaft of sunlight with a thunderstorm brewing the background. 5 minutes later it tipped down!!!
Thought you might like to see some of my Varsity slides that I took at Little Rissington during 1968-70.
#294 and #295 are at Little Rissington on 11th September 1971. CFS Harvard FS890 was gate guard there during the ’60s, then soon after this show was reported as moved to Boscombe Down for use for spares to keep the A&AEE Harvards flying. Does anyone know its status?
